A Distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) system offers a computer-generated virtual world in which individuals located at different
places in the physical world can interact with one another. In order to achieve real-time response for a large user base,
DVE systems need to have a scalable architecture. In this paper, we present the design of a grid-enabled service oriented
framework for facilitating the construction of scalable DVE systems on computing grids. A service component called “gamelet”
is proposed, whose distinctive mark is its high mobility for supporting dynamic load sharing. We propose a gamelet migration
protocol which can ensure the transparency and efficiency of gamelet migration, and an adaptive gamelet load-balancing (AGLB)
algorithm for making gamelet redistribution decisions at runtime. The algorithm considers both the synchronization costs of
the DVE system and network latencies inherent in the grid nodes. The activities of the users and the heterogeneity of grid
resources are also considered in order to carry out load sharing more effectively. We evaluate the performance of the proposed
mechanisms through a multiplayer online game prototype implemented using the Globus toolkit. The results show that our approach
can achieve faster response times and higher throughputs than some existing approaches.

Midland is a service-oriented software infrastructure that enables the clustering of arbitrarily large collections of computing
resources. The resulting clusters may be integrated to form an open, dynamically configurable computational grid system where
each cluster defines a self-reliant and independent management domain. Web Services make up the primary integration mechanism
both at the cluster and grid levels, respectively. This is complemented by a light XML based messaging protocol exclusively
used for cluster bound interactions. The paper describes Midland’s architecture, and the service-oriented approach taken to
develop the associated resource management mechanisms. It also includes an exposition of the model of service capacity which
is one of the enablers of the service-centric strategy underlying the cluster management mechanisms. The operational performance
of Midland is illustrated experimentally in the context of a Grid test-bed comprising three clusters. The experimental results

In service-oriented computing (SOC) environments, service clients interact with service providers for services or transactions.
From the point view of service clients, the trust status of a service provider is a critical issue to consider, particularly
when the service provider is unknown to them. Typically, the trust evaluation is based on the feedback on the service quality
provided by service clients. In this paper, we first present a trust management framework that is event-driven and rule-based.
In this framework, trust computation is based on formulae. But rules are defined to determine which formula to use and what
arguments to use, according to the event occurred during the transaction or service. In addition, we propose some trust evaluation
metrics and a formula for trust computation. The formula is designed to be adaptable to different application domains by setting
suitable arguments. Particularly, the proposed model addresses the incremental characteristics of trust establishment process.
Furthermore, we propose a fuzzy logic based approach for determining reputation ranks that particularly differentiates new
service providers and old (long-existing) ones. This is further incentive to new service providers and penalize poor quality
services from service providers. Finally, a set of empirical studies has been conducted to study the properties of the proposed
approaches, and the method to control the trust changes in both trust increment and decrement cases. The proposed framework
is adaptable for different domains and complex trust evaluation systems.
