Measurements of the growth rate of roughness on a cathode surface can be used to study the physics of cathodic processes. But these growth rates are cell wide variables and they ordinarily depend on what is taking place at the anode as well as at the cathode. Our aim is to derive a simple condition under which the anode makes no contribution to the interpretation of growth rate measurements at the cathode.Our condition stems from the contribution of ion diffusion to the growth rate and it is satisfied for all non-small values of the wave number of a growing disturbance. This, together with the fact that surface tension is the only stabilizing factor and the fact that the surface tension coefficient multiplying the wave number is small, means that the anode ought not to be important for the fastest growing wave numbers.Once the effect of the anode is eliminated, the growth rate at the cathode can be expressed in a formula so simple that pencil and paper calculations are possible and this makes important questions in cell design easy to answer, e.g., is the growth rate diffusion controlled? 相似文献

The local bond mechanics of glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars in normal strength concrete was investigated through experimental testing and analytical modeling. The experimental program was comprised of 30 direct tension pullout specimens with short anchorages. A novel test setup, specially designed so as to minimize the spurious influence of testing conditions on measured bond properties was adopted in the study. Parameters considered were the bar roughness and diameter, the size effect expressed by the constant cover to bar diameter ratio, and the external confining pressure exerted over the anchorage length by transverse externally bonded FRP sheets. Results of the study were summarized in the form of local bond-slip curves, whereby performance limit states were quantified by the amount of loaded end slip and bond strength. An analytical model of the bond stress-slip response of a GFRP bar was derived from first principles and calibrated against the test data of the present investigation. Using the calibrated model, design values for bond and slip were estimated with reference to the code limit state model for bond. 相似文献

Surface characterization of 6H-SiC (0001) substrates in indentation and abrasive machining was carried out to investigate microfracture, residual damage, and surface roughness associated with material removal and surface generation. Brittle versus plastic deformation was studied using Vickers indention and nano-indentation. To characterize the abrasive machining response, the 6H-SiC (0001) substrates were ground using diamond wheels with grit sizes of 25, 15 and 7 μm, and then polished with diamond suspensions of 3 and 0.05 μm. It is found that in indentation, there was a scale effect for brittle versus plastic deformation in 6H-SiC substrates. Also, in grinding, the scales of fracture and surface roughness of the substrates decreased with a decrease in diamond grit size. However, in polishing, a reduction in grit size of diamond suspensions gave no significant improvement in surface roughness. Furthermore, the results showed that fracture-free 6H-SiC (0001) surfaces were generated in polishing with the existence of the residual crystal defects, which were associated with the origin of defects in single crystal growth. 相似文献

Compressors are being required to operate at increasingly severe conditions in order to increase efficiency, and with the transition from CFC to HFC and natural refrigerants, protective ferrous chloride films have been eliminated. To recover lost wear resistance and transition to oil-less operation, greater protection is sought through the application of hard coatings with enhanced tribological properties. Controlled reciprocating pin-on-disk experiments imitating the wrist pin-connecting rod interface were performed using a High Pressure Tribometer under unlubricated conditions. Specimens used for these experiments included WC/C coated cylindrical 52100 steel wrist pins and uncoated cast iron disks. The performance of WC/C with temperature variation as well as running-in characteristics were evaluated using surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that steady-state friction coefficients decreased with increasing temperature while friction coefficients increased during the running-in period. Also, wear decreased from testing in room temperature up to 80 °C and beyond that, increased due to unstable running-in. Based on the research presented in this work, hard coatings have the potential to replace oil in future compressors. 相似文献
