The grouping of pixels based on some similarity criteria is called image segmentation. In this paper the problem of color image segmentation is considered as a clustering problem and a fixed length genetic algorithm (GA) is used to handle it. The effectiveness of GA depends on the objective function (fitness function) and the initialization of the population. A new objective function is proposed to evaluate the quality of the segmentation and the fitness of a chromosome. In fixed length genetic algorithm the chromosomes have same length, which is normally set by the user. Here, a self organizing map (SOM) is used to determine the number of segments in order to set the length of a chromosome automatically. An opposition based strategy is adopted for the initialization of the population in order to diversify the search process. In some cases the proposed method makes the small regions of an image as separate segments, which leads to noisy segmentation. A simple ad hoc mechanism is devised to refine the noisy segmentation. The qualitative and quantitative results show that the proposed method performs better than the state-of-the-art methods. 相似文献

This paper presents a robust rule-based approach for the splitting of binary clumps that are formed by objects of diverse shapes and sizes. First, the deepest boundary pixels, i.e., the concavity pixels in a clump, are detected using a fast and accurate scheme. Next, concavity-based rules are applied to generate the candidate split lines that join pairs of concavity pixels. A figure of merit is used to determine the best split line from the set of candidate lines. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is robust and accurate. 相似文献

Exploiting synergies afforded by a host of recently available national-scale data sets derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and passive optical remote sensing, this paper describes the development of a novel empirical approach for the provision of regional- to continental-scale estimates of vegetation canopy height. Supported by data from the 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), the National Elevation Dataset (NED), the LANDFIRE project, and the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2001, this paper describes a data fusion and modeling strategy for developing the first-ever high-resolution map of canopy height for the conterminous U.S. The approach was tested as part of a prototype study spanning some 62,000 km2 in central Utah (NLCD mapping zone 16). A mapping strategy based on object-oriented image analysis and tree-based regression techniques is employed. Empirical model development is driven by a database of height metrics obtained from an extensive field plot network administered by the USDA Forest Service-Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. Based on data from 508 FIA field plots, an average absolute height error of 2.1 m (r = 0.88) was achieved for the prototype mapping zone. 相似文献

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is one of the most effective modalities for modern cancer treatment. The key to successful IMRT treatment hinges on the delivery of a two-dimensional discrete radiation intensity matrix using a device called a multileaf collimator (MLC). Mathematically, the delivery of an intensity matrix using an MLC can be viewed as the problem of representing a non-negative integral matrix (i.e., the intensity matrix) by a linear combination of certain special non-negative integral matrices called segments, where each such segment corresponds to one of the allowed states of the MLC. The problem of representing the intensity matrix with the minimum number of segments is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, we present two approximation algorithms for this matrix representation problem. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first algorithms to achieve non-trivial performance guarantees for multi-row intensity matrices. 相似文献

Partitioning the universe of discourse and determining intervals containing useful temporal information and coming with better interpretability are critical for forecasting in fuzzy time series. In the existing literature, researchers seldom consider the effect of time variable when they partition the universe of discourse. As a result, and there is a lack of interpretability of the resulting temporal intervals. In this paper, we take the temporal information into account to partition the universe of discourse into intervals with unequal length. As a result, the performance improves forecasting quality. First, time variable is involved in partitioning the universe through Gath–Geva clustering-based time series segmentation and obtain the prototypes of data, then determine suitable intervals according to the prototypes by means of information granules. An effective method of partitioning and determining intervals is proposed. We show that these intervals carry well-defined semantics. To verify the effectiveness of the approach, we apply the proposed method to forecast enrollment of students of Alabama University and the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index. The experimental results show that the partitioning with temporal information can greatly improve accuracy of forecasting. Furthermore, the proposed method is not sensitive to its parameters. 相似文献

Non-destructive testing (NDT) plays a critical role in controlling the structural integrity (therefore the quality) of aeronautical parts, during fabrication as well as during maintenance. Eddy current (EC) testing is one of the most used NDT techniques in the aerospace industry. However, EC testing is still mainly performed by human operators and reliability as well as repeatability is not always guaranteed. To solve these issues, automating this NDT technique with a robotic system is investigated. In this paper, an EC probe equipped with a passive compliant system is assumed to be attached to the end-effector of a 6-DOF manipulator arm to carry on the inspection. Then, assuming that a 3D model of the inspected part is known a priori, a coverage path planning method using a zigzag (or rastering) pattern adapted to EC testing on aeronautical structures with a complex geometry is proposed. To reach this objective, the approach adopted in this work is to adapt existing coverage path planning techniques based on a “divide-and-conquer” strategy used for spraying applications to EC inspection. More precisely, three successive segmentations are applied to the surface to be inspected so that consistent rastering paths can be generated. Precise measurements on abdominal organs are vital prior to the important clinical procedures. Such measurements require accurate segmentation of these organs, which is a very challenging task due to countless anatomical variations and technical difficulties. Although, several features with various classifiers have been designed to overcome these challenges, abdominal organ segmentation via classification is still an emerging field in order to reach desired precision. Recent studies on multiple feature–classifier combinations show that hierarchical systems outperform composite feature–single classifier models. In this study, how hierarchical formations can translate to improved accuracy, when large size feature spaces are involved, is explored for the problem of abdominal organ segmentation. As a result, a semi-automatic, slice-by-slice segmentation method is developed using a novel multi-level and hierarchical neural network (MHNN). MHNN is designed to collect complementary information about organs at each level of the hierarchy via different feature–classifier combinations. Moreover, each level of MHNN receives residual data from the previous level. The residual data is constructed to preserve zero false positive error until the last level of the hierarchy, where only most challenging samples remain. The algorithm mimics analysis behaviour of a radiologist by using the slice-by-slice iteration, which is supported with adjacent slice similarity features. This enables adaptive determination of system parameters and turns into the advantage of online training, which is done in parallel to the segmentation process.
