Terminally ill patients and volunteer support: Is it the right intervention?

Comments on the article by K. T. Herbst-Damm and J. A. Kulik (see record 2005-02260-012) entitled Volunteer support, marital status, and the survival times of terminally ill patients. Can a simple and low-cost intervention, such as a visit by a volunteer, extend the life of terminally ill patients? The answer, according to a study by Herbst-Damm and Kulik (2005), is yes. When it comes to quality of life, however, the effects of volunteer visits remain murky. Thus, it is critical that we look beyond effects on longevity and assess how such a program would influence quality of life. Extending the life of terminally ill patients might not always a blessing. Prolonging their life might even cause harm, as it can extend unwanted physical and mental suffering. It may also go against some patients' desire to hasten their death. Despite Herbst-Damm and Kulik's important findings, the current author remains unconvinced as to the merits of implementing volunteer visits as an intervention policy. 基于ASP.NET的图书馆志愿者考勤系统

针对图书馆志愿者管理工作需要,利用ASP.NET开发平台和SQL后台数据库开发出一套便于操作和维护的图书馆志愿者考勤系统,系统从需求分析、柜架设计、数据库设计、数据流程图及模块的实现等方面进行介绍。     

无偿献血志愿者信息管理平台的设计与实现

近年来,各公益单位和一些服务行业都有志愿者加入并提供服务,而且服务队伍也在逐年扩大,作为公益性卫生行业的血站,也有许多为无偿献血提供服务的志愿者,一方面参与无偿献血,另一方面又为献血者提供服务。宁夏全区各血站,大部分都建立了自己的无偿献血志愿者队伍,并随时为献血者提供全面周到的服务。然而随着全区无偿献血事业的发展,需要对志愿者参与无偿献血工作服务进行全方位的管理,因此,笔者站在全区的角度对无偿献血志愿者的管理模式进行了定位,并且探讨利用计算机网络管理模式,提出自己的设计思路与方法,使其能够适应目前全区各血站无偿献血志愿者具体服务内容与理念。     

面向移动设备的温度感知的任务调度算法

由于志愿者分布式计算可以为计算量庞大的科研项目提供足够的计算能力,甚至比超级计算机的计算能力还要强大,因此,志愿者分布式计算技术受到了很多研究人员的关注,很多不同的志愿者分布式计算架构被广泛应用。以往的很多志愿者分布式计算架构通常考虑的志愿者主机是PC电脑,或者单纯地把移动设备当作PC电脑一样进行处理。由于移动设备的很多特性跟PC电脑存在着很大的差异,所以很多时候这些志愿者分布式计算架构并不能高效地处理同时拥有PC电脑和移动设备志愿者的志愿计算项目。针对志愿者分布式计算系统上两个主流的志愿者分布式计算任务调度方法——迭代计算的任务调度算法和先来先服务的调度算法FCFS在处理移动设备志愿者计算上存在着的不足,为了提高志愿者分布式计算平台的执行效率,提出了一个面向移动设备的温度感知的任务调度算法TATSA。实验结果表明,TATSA比主流的任务调度算法ISA和FCFS在移动设备志愿者计算时效率明显更高。     

我国城市社区网站建设状况及对策研究

为了解决我国城市社区网站建设中所存在的问题,如社区事务繁杂、建设资金缺乏、信息类人才短缺等,对社区与其他组织所建立起来的稳定合作关系进行探索研究,主张发掘利用大学生志愿者资源来有效解决社区资金和信息化人才短缺的问题,从而使高校为社区网站建设提供长期、稳定的智力支持和技术支持。

Abstract

In the middle of the 19th century, traffic congestion on the streets of New York City's commercial districts was, as it remains today, a major problem. Getting around town was especially difficult for pedestrians. Numerous solutions to ease the situation were proposed. One popular idea that had been discussed for years was finally tried in 1867. A bridge for pedestrians was built spanning the intersection of Broadway and Fulton Street in the heart of crowded lower Manhattan. Officially called the Broadway Bridge it became more commonly known as the ‘Loew Bridge’ after City Alderman Charles E. Loew, a major proponent of the project. As successful and practical as the bridge might have been it was removed a year following its erection. Its short life has been attributed to Knox, the famous hatter, who, with a store on one corner of the intersection and competition all around him, apparently felt it was a deterrent to business. According to one newspaper account, a sign was hung on the bridge just before its demolition that read, ‘This bridge has been Loew for some time, Hard Knox killed it.’

当代社会高速发展,人民群众生活质量不断提高,物质水平以及精神需求不断上升,对自身生命财产安全也就越来越关注。与此同时,政府以及社会各界对于消防站灭火救援工作越来越重视。消防人员根据自身工作特点,不断实践探索出科学合理的建设管理方案,并使其不断完善。     

Daily recovery experiences: The role of volunteer work during leisure time.

This study focused on the role of volunteer work for daily recovery from work. In a 1-week diary study with 166 employees, we assessed the amount of time spent on volunteer work during leisure time, and the recovery facets of psychological detachment from work (i.e., mentally switching off from work), mastery experiences (i.e., pursuing challenging activities), and community experiences (i.e., cultivating relationships) every day before participants went to bed. Results from hierarchical linear modeling (n = 529 days) showed volunteer work during leisure time to be positively related to mastery experiences and community experiences suggesting volunteer work to contribute to successful recovery by creating new resources.
