Druids' Knowledge in Chemical Engineering: Analysis of the Illustrated Literature by Goscinny and Uderzo

The illustrated literature series Asterix (and Obelix) is commonly known as entertainment and distraction, but behind that mask, case studies for chemical production in small medium enterprises and the crucial role of research and development can be discovered. The series rightly puts chemistry and chemical engineering at the heart of success and prosperity. Overall, the motives exemplified are of high relevance today for chemical industry.     

An effective procedure for the distribution of magazines

The article provides theoretical and empirical findings on developing an effective procedure for magazine single copy distribution. Considerations of determinants of demand are provided, emphasizing the importance of price and seasonality. A relative adjustment formula for stockout corrections is introduced, applicable in connection with normally distributed demand. The main contribution is a new demand forecasting and supply decision model, taking explicitly into account price and seasonality. The applicability and potential economic benefits are shown by giving results from an extensive empirical test in the Finnish single copy market.     

The function of diagram with numbered arrows and text in helping readers construct kinematic representations: Evidenced from eye movements and reading tests

Eye-tracking technology can reflect readers' sophisticated cognitive processes and explain the psychological meanings of reading to some extent. This study investigated the function of diagrams with numbered arrows and illustrated text in conveying the kinematic information of machine operation by recording readers’ eye movements and reading tests. Participants read two diagrams depicting how a flushing system works with or without numbered arrows. Then, they read an illustrated text describing the system. The results showed the arrow group significantly outperformed the non-arrow group on the step-by-step test after reading the diagrams, but this discrepancy was reduced after reading the illustrated text. Also, the arrow group outperformed the non-arrow group on the troubleshooting test measuring problem solving. Eye movement data showed the arrow group spent less time reading the diagram and text which conveyed less complicated concept than the non-arrow group, but both groups allocated considerable cognitive resources on complicated diagram and sentences. Overall, this study found learners were able to construct less complex kinematic representation after reading static diagrams with numbered arrows, whereas constructing a more complex kinematic representation needed text information. Another interesting finding was kinematic information conveyed via diagrams is independent of that via text on some areas.

The figure of the accomplished artist in one medium who develops an expertise in another always attracts interest, whether in a sense of amazement over so much energy, or in a sense of relief that even a virtuoso can be an amateur. One thinks ofEinstein and his violin, Gottfried Keller and his painting, William Thackeray and his caricatures, and many others. Emile Zola, Photograph presents us with a handsomely produced addition to this list, but the main role of this book is, of course, to fill another niche in the Zola shrine. Relatively little technical information is giveu, and one suspects that the primary audience was intended to be Zola admirers, lay as well as professional. Although there are several biographical sketches, the reader not familiar with Zola's life will not be able to appreciate the book fully, particularly since Zola's passion for photography developed only near the end of his life.     

British Nature Photographers in Wild Life

This article concerns the work of a group of British wildlife photographers just prior to World War I. A photographic exhibition in 1912 by members of the Zoological Photographic Club led to the publication of Wild Life: An Illustrated Monthly, edited by Douglas English. Wild Life was published between 1913 and 1918, and, especially in the pre‐war issues, it achieved an impressive standard of reproduction of natural history photography. Mammals and birds were pictured in their natural habitats; hitherto most wildlife pictures had been taken in Zoos, where the subjects were shown out of context. The editor of Wild Life believed that nature‐photographers should have an opportunity to mitigate or correct artistic defects in their negatives. I argue that it is a wildlife photograph's consideration of content and context that determines its artistic merit.

The Jersey Years; Photographer in the Circle of Victor Hugo

Abstract

An interesting and little-discussed body of photographic work is connected with the circle of Victor Hugo during the years of his exile on the island of Jersey in the English Channel, from 1852 to 1855. These works are now dispersed; a n~umber of them are in Paris, in the Museé de la Maison de Victor Hugo and in the Bibliothèque Nationale, another survives in the archivcs of the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; and various other examples exist in private collections. The Jersey photographs are the result of a joint effort by Charles Hugo, the poet's son, and his friend, Auguste Vacquerie.
