Three reconditioned rail car couplers, arbitrarily identified as couplers, failed during service due to cracking of the front
face. The three couplers were reportedly upgraded by quenching and tempering to enhance strength and toughness. The objective
of this investigation was to determine the mode of crack propagation and the root cause of the observed failures.
Verl E. (Bud) Kahle, P.E., was a professional failure analyst for more than forty years. After receiving his Bachelor of Science
degree in physical metallurgy from Washington State University 1957, Bud was employed by the General Electric Company at a
facility in Hanford, Washington. He later was employed by the Aerojet General Corporation and eventually was head of the Southern
Pacific Materials Science Laboratory in Sacramento. After retirement from Southern Pacific he owned and operated his own firm,
Kahle Metallurgical Consulting Services, for fifteen years. He came to be known as “the man with the answers” to clients in
a variety of industries. Bud was a Life Member of ASM International.
Many of Bud’s clients remarked on the high quality of his failure analysis case histories and encouraged him to have them
published. After Bud passed away in 1999, his wife, Suzanne, approached ASM International to see if the society would be interested
in publishing any of his work. Mrs. Kahle was able to supply a large number of reports, which Bud had carefully archived over
the years. Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention Associate Editor Michael Stevenson read through the collected case histories, selected the ones to be included in this issue,
and edited them for journal publication.

Potential safety hazards (PSHs) along the track needs to be inspected and evaluated regularly to ensure a safe environment for high-speed railroad operations. Other than track inspection, evaluating potential safety hazards in the nearby areas often requires inspectors to patrol along the track and visually identify potential threads to the train operation. The current visual inspection approach is very time-consuming and may raise safety concerns for the inspectors, especially in remote areas. Using the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has great potential to complement the visual inspection by providing a better view from the top and ease the safety concerns in many cases. This study develops an automatic PSH detection framework named YOLARC (You Only Look at Railroad Coefficients) using UAV imagery for high-speed railroad monitoring. First, YOLARC is equipped with a new backbone having multiple available receptive fields to strengthen the multi-scale representation capability at a granular level and enrich the semantic information in the feature space. Then, the system integrates the abundant semantic features at different high-level layers by a light weighted feature pyramid network (FPN) with multi-scale pyramidal architecture and a Protonet with residual structure to precisely predict the track areas and PSHs. A hazard level evaluation (HLE) method, which calculates the distance between identified PSH and the track, is also developed and integrated for quantifying the hazard level. Experiments conducted on the UAV imagery of high-speed railroad dataset show the proposed system can quickly and effectively turn UAV images into useful information with a high detection rate and processing speed. 相似文献

Seismic Retrofit of Hollow Rectangular Bridge Columns 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The seismic performance of rectangular hollow bridge columns is a significant issue of the high-speed rail project in Taiwan. The flexural ductility and shear capacity of such columns with the configuration of lateral reinforcement used in Taiwan have been studied recently. This paper reports that hollow rectangular bridge columns retrofitted with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load to investigate their seismic behavior, including flexural ductility, dissipated energy, and shear capacity. An analytical model was also developed to predict the moment-curvature curve of sections and the load-displacement relationship of columns. Based on the test results, the seismic behavior of such columns will be presented. The test results were also compared to the proposed analytical model. It was found that the ductility factors of the tested piers are in the range from 3.4 to 6.3, and the proposed analytical model can predict the load-displacement relationship of such columns with acceptable accuracy. All in all, FRP sheets can effectively improve both the ductility factor and shear capacity of hollow rectangular bridge columns. 相似文献

This study presents investigations regarding visual inspection, dynamic testing, and finite-element modeling of an approximately 80-year old reinforced concrete tied-arch railway bridge that is still in service in Turkey. Investigations were conducted as part of a systematic periodic inspection along Ankara-Zonguldak railway line. The bridge is subject to heavy freight trains with increasing axle loads. Field tests such as material tests and dynamic tests were used to calibrate the finite-element model of the bridge. Detailed information regarding testing and model updating procedure is given. Based on test results, computer model was refined. The calibrated model of the bridge structure was then used for structural assessment and evaluation. Despite sufficient overall safety, local details were found to be problematic. Due to insufficient bond length in hanger-to-arch connection, a strengthening scheme using steel channel sections was proposed. 相似文献
