In this work, the tribological properties of a new material obtained by revulcanization with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and devulcanized ground tire rubber (GTR) were investigated. GTR was devulcanized using the microwave method at a constant power while varying the microwave exposure time. Devulcanized rubber (DV‐R) and untreated GTR were revulcanized by mixing with SBR at different rates (10, 30, 50 phr). To determine friction and wear characteristics of the samples, pin (ball) on disc and abrasion tests were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the worn surfaces of the composites to correlate the experimental test results to the wear mechanisms. All of these tests and experiments were performed on original vulcanized rubber samples for comparison. The composites exhibited different friction and wear behavior due to morphology, dispersion behavior and devulcanization functionalization of ground tire rubber. In general, DV‐R/SBR composites exhibited improvement in both mechanical and tribological properties. However, the enhanced compatibility of DV‐R resulting from the specific chemical coupling of DV‐R with SBR was crucial for the mechanical, friction and wear properties.

The influence of rubber devulcanization by microwaves in the reversion behavior is still modestly explored in the literature. The reversion occurs due to thermal degradation of unstable crosslinkings formed during the vulcanization process. This phenomenon results in poor final mechanical properties of the artifacts. In this work, some formulations based on natural rubber (NR) with the incorporation of NR devulcanized by microwaves at different exposure times to the microwaves were vulcanized by compression molding at the same temperature and time used for the study of their vulcanization characteristics, in order to correlate the properties obtained and understand the influence of the reversion on the mechanical properties. The results showed that levels of devulcanization/degradation of the recycled phase, as well as the additional heating time influenced on the behavior of reversion and, consequently, on the mechanical properties. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The application of silicone polymers as additives in commercial polymers for improving their surface properties is an attractive method. Use of reclaimed silicone rubber for blending with commercial organic polymers is an equally attractive possibility. Ultrasonically devulcanized silicone rubber was mixed with virgin and ultrasonically devulcanized styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR). The surface and bulk mechanical properties and curing behavior of the blends of SBR with ultrasonically devulcanized silicone rubber were investigated. Contact angles of these blends were measured, and the concentration of silicone rubber on the surface was calculated. It was shown that the soluble part of devulcanized silicone rubber migrates to the surface. The addition of 5 phr of devulcanized silicone rubber led to the formation of a continuous surface layer containing 100% silicone rubber. In general, the mechanical properties of the blends remain intact and, in some cases, are even better than those of SBR. Curing behavior shows that the blends have the similar cure kinetics as virgin or devulcanized SBR, but a lower final torque. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
