Inhibition of microbial growth in ready‐to‐eat food stored at ambient temperature by modified atmosphere packaging

This study was undertaken to develop a modified atmosphere package to control microbial growth in ready‐to‐eat (RTE) products stored at ambient temperature. Ethanol and/or limonene associated with modified atmosphere (CO₂ : O₂ : N₂ = 30% : 5% : 65%) was used to inhibit the growth of total air‐borne microorganisms and Escherichia coli in RTE products stored at 25°C. The results indicated that 0.05% ethanol vapour in the headspace was effective to inhibit the growth of air‐borne microorganisms and E. coli at 25°C for 72 h in a model study, and the effectiveness was related to ethanol content. Both 73 ppm limonene and 0.05% ethanol vapour enhanced the bacteriostatic effect of modified atmosphere in RTE sushi roll products, and no off‐flavour was detected using this formulated gas; however, no significant inhibitory effect was observed for RTE cold noodle products. This study concludes that combinations of carbon dioxide, ethanol or limonene vapours are effective to inhibit microbial growth in RTE food at ambient temperature, and the outcome may be due to the hurdle effect. High temperature controlled atmosphere experiments for catalysts in a transmission electron microscope

A new transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specimen preparation procedure for high temperature experiments using a controlled atmosphere specimen holder (HTCASH) has been developed. It is designed for studying the microstructure of catalyst specimens before and after treatments in various gases. The procedure involved (1) finding a new formula for the embedding material, (2) devising a new method of making specimen supports, and (3) developing a method for removing the embedding material after the specimen has been microtomed. These techniques were then brought together to produce the ideal specimens for the HTCASH experiments. As an extra benefit, this procedure is also suitable for preparing specimens for ultrahigh resolution imaging experiments. The application of the new procedure in HTCASH experiments is illustrated through a high temperature reduction of a Co/SiO₂-923 catalyst.     

Laboratory study of property-modified prebaked carbon anode and application in large aluminum electrolysis cells

A kind of complex additive mainly containing Al, Mg, F, and O was prepared. The synthetical performances of the property-modified prebaked anodes containing additives were tested in laboratory. On the basis of ideal testing results obtained, a large number of industrial prebaked property-modified anodes are prepared in a large-scale aluminum company. Further more, they are all used in 160 kA prebaked anode aluminum electrolysis cells. The statistic result show that, compared with common anodes, the property-modified ones enhance current by 11.6 kg per ton aluminum averagely.     

Douglas W. Bray (1918-2006).

由碳五馏分合成甲基叔戊基醚工艺的研究

以催化裂化C_5馏分与工业甲醇为原料,D005型大孔强酸型阳离子交换树脂为催化剂,采用筒式膨胀床双反应器,考察了甲基叔戊基醚的合成工艺条件。一阶反应器的操作条件为：循环比为2：1,醇烯比为1.2：1,入口温度为70℃,空速为6 h~(-1),平均转化率为53.63%；二阶反应器的操作条件为：入口温度为50℃,空速为1.2h~(-1),平均转化率为71.32%,全调合方案可以使催化裂化汽油的辛烷值平均提高0.55个单位。
