For the investigations of the gas-liquid phase equilibria, a new apparatus has been developed capable of simultaneously determining the pressure and the liquid and vapor densities using Archimedes' principle. The relative measurement uncertainties of the liquid and vapor densities of R134a (purity, 99.999%) at 313 K are 2×10–4 and 7×10–4, respectively (95% confidence level). For the measurements in the liquid region along nine quasi-isochores at pressures up to 5 MPa, an isochoric apparatus was used. The relative measurement uncertainty ofpv/(RT) is less than 1×10–3. In addition to the investigation of the (p, v, T) properties, the temperature and pressure at the triple point and the vapor pressure between the triple point and 265 K were measured. On the basis of these data, a vapor pressure correlation has been developed that reproduces the measured vapor pressures within the uncertainty of measurement. The isochore theory, which was proposed more than 40 years ago, depicts the mammalian genome as a mosaic of long, homogeneous regions that are characterized by their guanine and cytosine (GC) content. The human genome, for instance, was claimed to consist of five compositionally distinct isochore families. The isochore theory, in all its reincarnations, has been repeatedly falsified in the literature, yet isochore proponents have persistently resurrected it by either redefining isochores or by proposing alternative means of testing the theory. Here, I deal with the latest attempt to salvage this seemingly immortal zombie—a sequence segmentation method called isoSegmenter, which was claimed to “identify” isochores while at the same time disregarding the main characteristic attribute of isochores—compositional homogeneity. I used a series of controlled, randomly generated simulated sequences as a benchmark to study the performance of isoSegmenter. The main advantage of using simulated sequences is that, unlike real data, the exact start and stop point of any isochore or homogeneous compositional domain is known. Based on three key performance metrics—sensitivity, precision, and Jaccard similarity index—isoSegmenter was found to be vastly inferior to isoPlotter, a segmentation algorithm with no user input. Moreover, isoSegmenter identified isochores where none exist and failed to identify compositionally homogeneous sequences that were shorter than 100−200 kb. Will this zillionth refutation of “isochores” ensure a final and permanent entombment of the isochore theory? This author is not holding his breath.  相似文献

Two-phase vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) isochores for binary mixtures are defined as the thermodynamic paths along which the overall density and composition are fixed. Data along such isochores are generated from a modified Leung-Griffiths model fit to experimental data for the binary system nitrogen-methane. The behavior of the liquid volume fraction along these isochores is found to be similar to that for pure fluids. Rectilinear diameters for varying overall densities (fixed composition) are seen to be nearly coincident. Straight-line diameters and the critical liquid volume fraction method are utilized to predict critical densities using data near and removed from the critical point. Both methods give acceptable results but the critical liquid volume fraction method is more accurate. A critical literature review of the need for binary mixture critical densities is presented and a proposed experimental procedure is given for the determination of mixture critical densities.  相似文献
