We investigated the factors influencing an academic's propensity to patent and the quality of patenting in nanotechnology and biotechnology. We found that a university researcher is more likely to be listed as an inventor of a patented innovation, regardless of the assignee, if he receives private funding, has a fairly high level of cliquishness in the scientific network and has shown a prior capacity to successfully collaborate with industry, a concept that we named innovation loops. Furthermore, citation rate and number of claims, which are used to represent patent quality, are influenced by factors similar to those explaining patent quantity. 相似文献

This paper examines how specific dimensions related to innovative capabilities influence the economic value of science-based firms when they go public. To test a set of hypotheses, we conduct an empirical research of a sample of dedicated biotechnology firms that completed an initial public offering (IPO) in the USA during 1983–2009. The results indicate that technological diversity, the patent stock’s value and dominant functional diversity in top management teams (TMTs) are positively associated with raising funds through an IPO. However, intrapersonal functional diversity in the TMT does not have a significant effect. 相似文献

Currently, the electric vehicle (EV) technology is of great interest in China and around the world. This paper first conducts a comprehensive review of China's EV policies and the development of China's EV technology, and then analyzes the domestic performances of China's EV technology and its international competitiveness by adopting the recently developed concept of transnational patents. The results show an outstanding performance for China's EV technology in the domestic market, but a relatively poor performance in the international markets. Finally, several main factors causing the inconsistent performance of China's EV technology are proposed and discussed. 相似文献

It is now well accepted that although biotech inventions may relate to living materials it is possible to secure patent protection for all but a limited number in certain defined categories. The author traces the development of biotech patents from the early days, when decisions of the Courts and the EPO set the necessary precedents, to the adoption of the European Directive in July 1998. He then goes on to explain in more detail the key features of the Directive and refers to a number of precedent decisions which, in combination with the Directive, show how certain problem areas have been tackled. Although emphasis is placed on the key areas of plant and animal patents, the patenting of gene sequences and issues of morality the author stresses that the established principles of novelty, inventive step and industrial application are, more often than not, adequate to decide the patentability of the vast majority of biotech inventions. 相似文献
