The Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who, in the opinion of the Committee on Scientific Awards, has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. The 2009 winner of this award is Nancy E. Adler. A citation, biography, and selected bibliography of her works are provided. Phase noise analysis of source injection coupled quadrature oscillator

This paper analyzes the thermally induced phase noise and the up-conversion of flicker noise into phase noise of source injection coupled quadrature oscillator (SIC-QOSC), for the first time. Furthermore, this paper provides a complete analysis for the injection current of the SIC-QOSC and extracts the closed-form expressions for it for the first time, too. These expressions lead to obtaining the harmonics of the injection current as well as the oscillation amplitude, which is necessary for the phase noise analysis. To evaluate the extracted equations, this paper compares the calculated results with appropriate simulations. Comparisons confirm the accuracy of the proposed injection current expressions and the phase noise formulas. Using the closed-form equations of phase noise, designers can understand the SIC-QOSC's design tradeoffs and design the oscillator for given phase noise.     

Helmut E. Adler (1920–2001).

Presents an obituary for Helmut E. Adler, a warm and gentle scholar who packed several full-time careers into his life as a psychologist. In addition to being a superb undergraduate teacher, he conducted research in comparative psychology and wrote on the history of psychology. Psychotherapy that strives to encourage social interest: A simulated interview with Alfred Adler.

Alfred Adler developed Individual Psychology as a comprehensive model for understanding personality development and guiding psychological treatment. Adler emphasized the central role of social functioning in his views of optimal mental health. Adler's developmental views highlighted the role of inferiority feelings that create a striving to overcome perceived obstacles. In Adler's model, optimal functioning is guided by cooperation and compassion toward others. Many of the issues that were confronted by Adler remain highly relevant today, and they provide useful guidance regardless of a therapist's theoretical orientation. Obituary: Helmut E. Adler (1920-2001).

Memorializes Helmut E. Adler, known for his research on spatial orientation in birds and for his writings on the history of psychology. In the 1960s with the help of his son Barry, he used computer simulations to study bird migration patterns, a highly innovative technique for the time. His most notable work in the field of the history of psychology was his translation of Volume 1 of Fechner's Elemente der Psychophysik in 1966. Review of Psychopathology and psychotherapy: From diagnosis to treatment.

Reviews the book, Psychopathology and psychotherapy: From diagnosis to treatment, edited by Len Sperry and Jon Carlson (see record 1993-97172-000). Alfred Adler is perhaps the most unjustly overlooked theorist in our field, and deserves wider recognition and greater integration into the clinical mainstream. Such is the admirable goal of Sperry and Carlson's effort. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to achieve that goal. This is an edited text in which a variety of distinguished Adlerians have been asked to address specific DSM categories. In each case the chapters begin with a review of the category in question, typically including a summary of diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, course, associated problems, various etiological positions, and so forth. This non-Adlerian material consumes an enormous proportion of the book. The intent was to produce not only an Adlerian reference source, but also a text for undergraduate and graduate psychopathology courses in all mental health disciplines, as well as interns and residents. It attempts to do too much, and fails to do enough. It attempts to appeal too widely, and fails to appeal at all. In nearly all of the chapters the coverage is insufficiently comprehensive to actually serve as part of an abnormal psychology textbook; this is particularly true in the areas of etiological theory and research. Announces Norman T. Adler as a recipient of the 1974 Early Career Award, and presents his biography and list of scientific publications. For his analytical studies of interactions between sensory stimuli, endocrine secretions, and reproductive function. By varying the mating performance of male rats and examining effects of differing amounts of resulting stimulation upon fertilization, gestation, and preparation for lactation in the female he has enlarged our comprehension of the vital role of behaviorally derived stimuli in reproduction of the species. Controlled spacing of coital stimulation combined with precise measurement of hormones in the blood has enabled him to construct an original and testable model of the sequence of endocrine and neural events which underlie the natural sequence of mating, conception, and pregnancy.
