Systematic packaging design tools integrating functional and environmental consequences on product life cycle: Case studies on laundry detergent and milk

This study presents systematic packaging design tools integrating functional and environmental consequences on product life cycle. To design packaging for sustainability, the trade-offs between functional and environmental aspects of packaging throughout the product life cycle should be considered. However, it is difficult for packaging designers to understand the overall trade-offs because the extent of the design consequences on the entire life cycle of packaging and its contents is unclear. We developed two tools for packaging design: the Life Cycle Association Matrix (LCAM) and the Function Network Diagram (FND). The following three steps, based on literature reviews and interviews with industrial experts, were applied. Firstly, we listed the product functions and design variables related to the functions as the attributes allocated to the product life cycle. Secondly, the attributes were connected appropriately based on causal relationships. Lastly, we identified the factors to support decision making in the packaging design procedure. As a result, the LCAM depicts the design consequences on the life cycle, and the FND determines the stakeholders affected by the design consequences. Two case studies were demonstrated to analyze the trade-offs by using our tools. In the case studies, a liquid laundry detergent bottle and a milk carton were redesigned. The tools identified the design consequences and stakeholders affected by the redesign of the usability and protective function for the detergent and milk cases, respectively. The results showed the significance of understanding the design consequences on the product life cycle by integrating the functional and environmental aspects.     

应用API 581对输气站场进行定量风险评价

目前专门针对输气站场的风险评价方法还不多，现有的手段也只是根据国家法律法规得出定性的评价结果，然后按照评价结果对照得出整改方案。为此，对输气站场的定量风险评价工作提出了一套新方法，得到了定量的和更加客观的风险排序，为管道站场的完整性管理工作提供了有力的支持；并以陕京输气管道榆林压气站为例，应用美国石油学会标准API 581（基于风险检测的基本源文件）对站内设施进行了风险评价，计算了站内设备和管线的失效后果、失效概率，得到了定量风险值，进而分析了风险值产生差异的原因。最后，针对我国输气管道风险评估工作提出了看法和建议。

The awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who, in the opinion of the Committee on Public Interest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. These contributions might include the identification or solution of significant social problems; unusual initiative or dedication to activity in the public interest; or the integration of the science and/or profession of psychology with social action in a manner beneficial to all. The Committee is authorized to present two awards per year, each with a prize of $2,000. The second award, for which recipients may not have held a Ph.D. for more than 15 years, was established to recognize the large number of excellent psychologists who have made significant contributions to the public interest during the early stages of their careers. Trauma, dissociation, and conflict: The space where neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychoanalysis overlap.

The authors describe their scientific and clinical interests in developing the panel Trauma, Dissociation, and Conflict: The Space Where Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and Psychoanalysis Overlap, given at the 22nd Annual Spring Meeting of the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association. They cite the influence of the panelists, Philip M. Bromberg, Wilma Bucci, and Joseph LeDoux, on their own work. Specializing in the treatment of chronic pain, Anderson has developed a relational intersubjective technique informed by this interdisciplinary approach. Gold's work has focused on the distinction between dissociative processes and repression in traumatic memory. The relevance of trauma, dissociation, and conflict, heightened since September 11, 2001, could not have been anticipated in the planning of the panel.
