Nested semantics over finite trees are equationally hard

This paper studies nested simulation and nested trace semantics over the language BCCSP, a basic formalism to express finite process behaviour. It is shown that none of these semantics affords finite (in)equational axiomatizations over BCCSP. In particular, for each of the nested semantics studied in this paper, the collection of sound, closed (in)equations over a singleton action set is not finitely based.     

Hoare vs Milner: Comparing Synchronizations in a Graphical Framework With Mobility

We compare the expressive power of Hoare (i.e., CSP style) and Milner (i.e., CCS style) synchronizations for defining graph transformations in a framework where edges can perform actions on adjacent nodes to synchronize their evolutions. Furthermore, nodes can be communicated and merged. We show that the expressive powers of the two synchronization models are different, but no one is greater than the other. Finally, we show that in many interesting cases the behaviour of a synchronization model can be mimicked by the other one using suitable translations for the rewritten graphs.     

1981 CPA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Science.

The major part of her career was at the Montreal Neurological Institute where she has become one of the founder and leaders in the field of neuropsychology. Her pioneering work in the study of brain-behaviour relationships has led us to a new understanding of the substrate of human learning and memory. Sustaining Technology

To attempt to capture the extent of the engagement in environmental and ecological issues by architects during the early 1970s as viewed through the pages of AD is an issue in itself. The editorial policy of the magazine at that time was such that it actively commissioned articles and global surveys that would inform the profession of the environmental impact of construction long before ‘sustainability’ became a convenient buzz word. Robert Webb is one of a new generation of environmental engineers who acknowledges a debt to those who helped to define the terms we use so readily today. He sees how architects fell off the environmental wagon during the middle of the 1970s and are only now beginning to climb back on, but wonders how much understanding of our planet has been lost in the interim. Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards for 1973.

The Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contribution are presented by the American Psychological Association at the annual convention. The awardees for this year are: Lee J. Cronbach, Conrad Kraft, Brenda Milner, and Benton J. Underwood. They were each presented with an award citation of his/her formal contributions to the development of scientific psychology and a check for one thousand dollars. These psychologists have agreed, in accordance with established custom, to present addresses on some phase of their scientific work at the 1974 Convention. The presentation of awards was made by R. Duncan Luce, Chair of the Committee on Scientific Awards. Other members of the Committee are Herschel Leibowitz, Brendan Maher, James Olds, Harold H. Kelley, and James J. Jenkins.
