In Building the Picture, a series of drawings that architect Elena Manferdini produced for an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago that ran during the spring and summer of 2015, visual effects and colour were applied to counteract Mies's highly uniform and modular mass-producible systems.     

Inhabiting the Body and the Spaces of Interaction

Wearable technologies create a tactile interface with the body of the user, providing a new model for architecture in which the surface between the subject and the object is almost seamless and sensory. As Valentina Croci explores, they also call on us to reconsider a more interdisciplinary mode of designing that accommodates a dynamic social dialogue between highly portable small-scale devices, their remote networks and the physical environment. The Fire Tower

The Fire Tower was a project by Johannes Itten, one of the most important exponents of the Bauhaus movement. The aim of this paper is to describe the shape of The Fire Tower with the language of linear algebra and give a virtual reconstruction, in order to understand how Itten managed to concretise his strong mathematical intuition in an artistic form, even though he was unable to formalise it entirely with adequate instruments.

Rural Studio: Incarnations of a Design-and-Build Programme

Catering for the needs of an impoverished rural community in Alabama through its design-and-build activities, Rural Studio leads the way internationally as a university-affiliated architecture programme with a social remit. Guest-Editor Michael Hensel describes how the initiative has grown and developed since it was first established over two decades ago, in 1993, by Samuel Mockbee for students from Auburn University. The realisation of tens of houses and community projects have not only helped to reshape the local environment, but with the more recent strategic approach advanced under Andrew Frear's directorship more long-term projects have been launched and greater emphasis has been placed on the responsible local sourcing of materials, energy and food.
