The Feildbarn
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios are leading an initiative to find an alternative use for the disused field barns of the Yorkshire Dales that will retain for prosperity these beautifully crafted structures roughened and enhanced by time. David Littlefield describes the pilot project in Lower Wharfedale, near Skipton, in which a timber pod has been created to provide basic accommodation for holidaymakers seeking a countryside break close to nature. In this paper, we focus on the launch of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, which was first published in 1925. We present the context of the launch and explain why it was closely connected to the period of the New Economic Policy. In the last section, we examine four articles about randomness and probability included in the first volumes of the encyclopedia in order to illustrate some debates from within the scientific scene in the USSR during the 1920s.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Jerome Bruner: Language, culture, self edited by David Bakhurst and Stuart G. Shanker (2001). Ten papers bounded by an editors' "Introduction" and Jerome Bruner's commentary, "In Response," constitute a volume that is probably as complete a presentation of the seminal issues in "cultural psychology" available anywhere. It is a joy to read and a tribute to Bruner's breadth of influence in all major areas of the discipline. What is remarkable about this volume is that the reader actually lives through Bruner's influence during the past five decades and comes to an appreciation of just how much of the theoretical course of the discipline is reflected in and can be understood through Bruner's writings. However, the papers collected here are not, as the editors note, a celebration of Bruner's legacy, but rather "a lens through which to see contemporary debates in psychology and cognate disciplines, debates about mind and culture, language and communication, identity and development." Abstract

On 6th July 1862, Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote a letter to Coleman Sellers, thanking him for some photographs received and excusing his own negligence in writing. His eldest son, missing in action in Richmond, commanded all his attention, but then Holmes added: ‘If it were not for this war, I should begin getting photographic apparatus tomorrow. If peace ever returns I feel sure I shall try my hand at the art and then I shall be only too happy to send you some of my handiwork in return for the many favors I have received from you’1. The letter catches Holmes at an interesting point in his life. Always intrigued by photography and well known among his friends as a popularizer of it, he was finally thinking of turning theory into practice.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Jerome Bruner: Language, culture, self by David Bakhurst and Stuart G. Shanker (2001). The subject of this fine collection of essays is Jerome Bruner’s contribution to our contemporary understanding of the mind. As the editors note, although Bruner has typically “concerned himself with concrete and practical issues, such as education and, most recently, the law, he has always been an intensely theoretical thinker, a man fascinated by ideas” (p. 1). It is for that reason that the editors and contributors to this volume have chosen to focus exclusively on Bruner’s work as a “philosophical psychologist and philosopher of psychology” (p. 1). Jerome Kagan.
Jerome Kagan is recognized for his achievements in psychology. This article provides a citation explaining his accomplishments, a biography and a selected bibliography. The citation is as follows: "For scientific leadership of the highest order, for a research career marked by never-failing zest and creativity, and for findings that have helped us understand the constant vs. the changing in the human personality, the early organization of mind and temperament, and the formation of ideas about the self. As much as any American, Jerome Kagan has led the great growth of developmental psychology in our time. He has been an inspired textbook writer and teacher. He has brought our scientific findings, mixed with his own special vision and wisdom, to the service of social programs and policies for children."
