Turning tradition into an instrument of research: The editorship of William Nicholson (1753–1815)

Mainly known for its links to the periodical market and radical politics, this article recontextualizes the editorship of William Nicholson (1753–1815) in terms of its roots in the metropolitan natural philosophical circles of the second half of the 18th century as well as its impact on experimenters and men of science after 1797. The article argues that Nicholson's editorship of the Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, and the Arts was a means to expand his philosophical significance among natural philosophers at home and abroad—and was, in fact, a form of epistemological subversion that challenged the “Banksian Learned Empire.”     

Obituaries: Leo Joseph Postman (1918-2004).

Presents the obituary of Leo Joseph Postman, one of the most prolific psychologists of the last century. With over 250 publications to his credit, Postman died on April 22, 2004, of heart failure in Marblehead, Massachusetts, at the age of 85. His life and career accomplishments are discussed. Architectural Patents and Open-Source Architectures: The Globalisation of Spatial Design Innovations (or Learning from ‘E99’)

Patents are the strongest form of intellectual property rights available internationally, so far unbeaten by open source as a body of innovation and know-how. Mark Garcia , senior lecturer in the Department of Architecture & Landscape at the University of Greenwich, London, here considers the pros and cons of the patent system for architects in the digital age: from issues over patent categorisation by type, to possibilities of micro-royalties through the capacity of design software to track every stage of input from multiple contributors.     

Actualising (Overlooked) Material Capacities

An emphasis on material synthesis is not without its pitfalls and challenges. Here Branko Kolarevic , Professor and Chair in Integrated Design at the University of Calgary Faculty of Environmental Design, alerts us to the dangers of overlooking materials' shifting capacities, which are so often scale dependent, while also disregarding existing materials in favour of the new or novel. As the potential grows for material systems in buildings to become more adaptive and to harness automation, Kolarevic describes some exciting developments that are taking place in dynamic facade design, providing the much-heralded promise of an efficient use of ambient energy.     

Obituary: Joseph Banks Rhine (1895-1980).

This item presents an obituary for Joseph Banks Rhine (1895-1980). During more than 50 years of research and related activities, Rhine made a sustained effort to develop psychical research into an experimental, academically based science and to win acceptance for it from the scientific community. The terms 'parapsychology' and 'extra-sensory perception', which he introduced in 1934 to denote, respectively, the new field devoted to the experimental study of psychic abilities and the abilities themselves, have become standard terms and testify to Rhine's importance for the field. Although Rhine's critics were able to score some minor points against his statistical techniques, he and his colleagues were able to demonstrate that their evaluative methods were basically sound, and they received support from the president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. The APA was subsequently willing to consider parapsychology seriously to the extent of appointing a committee of APA members to advise the "Journal of Parapsychology". The Duke parapsychology group, in turn, published their most ambitious survey of the field in 1940 in their book "Extra-Sensory Perception After Sixty Years", hoping to win the support of behavioral scientists. In the ensuing decades, however, parapsychology did not succeed in developing an academic network much beyond what it possessed in 1940. Rhine was recognized both within and without parapsychology as the founder and most authoritative spokesperson of the field. Only months before his death, in October 1979, he was elected president of the Society for Psychical Research in London. Rhine was a man of striking appearance and strong personality. The latter was important to the maintenance of his values and goals in the face of the hostility and ridicule that continued, sporadically, until the very end of his life. He is honored for advancing the applications of psychology as both a science and a profession. His service to students and to patients, as well as his research and scholarly writings in clinical psychology, health psychology, and clinical neuropsychology, have enriched the discipline of psychology. Joseph B. Margolin (1921-2006).

Presents an obituary for Joseph B. Margolin. In the 1940s, Margolin was in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. During that period, he was stationed at an Army hospital in California, and it was there that he developed an interest in clinical psychology. After being discharged, he returned to New York, where he received his doctorate in clinical and social psychology from New York University in 1954. He was always interested in combining his clinical activities with professional and political involvement, and held several positions including president of the District of Columbia Psychological Association, chair of the Maryland Board of Examiners for Psychologists, and staff member of the 1960 White House Conference on Children and Youth.
