The paper discusses the postulated suspension force, by which it is possible to explain some enigmatic phenomena observed
in different types of mass movements. This force is generated in thick suspensions as a result of friction between sinking
solid particles and static water. The suspension force is related to the seepage force but they have opposite directions.
Both forces form flow networks. Having explained the suspension force, the paper describes how this influences the movement
of material, particularly in debris flows. Enigmatic features and the mechanism of debris flows and lahars are explained by
virtue of the suspension force.

Cases of pipeline damage caused by landslides are common in coastal or mountainous regions, where a continuous monitoring/repair activity is planned in order to maintain their serviceability. The analysis of the soil–structure interaction phenomenon can be invoked to improve the planning and design of buried pipelines, to guide monitoring, and to reduce the risk of damage or failure. Two different approaches are considered in this paper: small scale laboratory tests and numerical simulations using the distinct element method (DEM). The experimental setup consists of a box filled with sand and water. Several experiments were performed, in which the diameter and the depth of the tube varied. The numerical simulations are divided in two separate series: in the first, the numerical model is calibrated and its reliability in reproducing the experimental tests is checked; in the second series, the direction of the relative displacement between the tube and the surrounding “numerical soil” varies over the range ±90° with respect to the horizontal. In the latter, both vertical and horizontal components of the drag force are measured and the corresponding interaction diagrams are constructed. The DEM simulations provide useful information about the shape of the failure mechanisms and the force transfer within the soil. 相似文献

Ring shear tests were conducted on five samples of different nature with a modified Imperial College type ring shear machine. The three different testing methods used, (1) individual sample testing for each normal stress, (2) increasing load multistage ring shear test, and (3) reducing load multistage ring shear test, all showed similar effective residual internal friction angle for the samples, irrespective of testing method. However, effective residual shear intercept was different according to the testing methodology. The internal friction angle did not vary, particularly after the first minimum point in the stress displacement curve, although the residual shear intercept decreased with increase in the displacement. The thickness of the shearing zone increased along with the displacement. The remolded peak shear strength for saturated conditions at field dry density varied with the consolidation history. Measurement of remolded peak shear strength was possible in a single sample using the increasing load multistage ring shear test at normal consolidation. The equilibrium water content of the sample after the ring shear test was nearly equal to the plastic limit. 相似文献

Of all landslides, subaerial flowslides are the most dangerous. According to the literature, flowslides in saturated granular deposits are caused by static liquefaction induced by loss of stability. However, the catastrophic flowslides that occurred on steep slopes in Campania (southern Italy) in 1998, 1999, and 2005 were triggered by rainwater infiltration into shallow deposits of pyroclastic soils, which were initially unsaturated. Starting from the experience collected during the investigations of some of these landslides, the writers consider flowslide evolution as a result of a mechanical chain process characterized by saturation increase due to rainwater infiltration, mechanical degradation, volumetric collapse, and static liquefaction, culminating in complete fluidization of the soil. In the paper this chain process is investigated through wetting tests both in suction controlled triaxial apparatuses and in a well-equipped small scale slope model. 相似文献

As a result of population pressures, hillsides in the world’s urban areas are being developed at an accelerating rate. This
development increases the risk for urban landslides triggered by rainfall or earthquake activity. To counter this risk, four
approaches have been employed by landslide managers and urban planners: (1) restricting development in landslide-prone areas;
(2) implementing and enforcing excavation, grading, and construction codes; (3) protecting existing developments by physical
mitigation measures and (4) developing and installing monitoring and warning systems. Where they have been utilized, these
approaches generally have been effective in reducing the risk due to landslide hazards. In addition to these practices, landslide
insurance holds promise as a mitigative measure by reducing the financial impact of landslides on individual property owners.
Until recently, however, such insurance has not been widely available and, where it is available, it is so expensive that
it has been little used.

This paper presents an innovative, practical methodology to establish priorities for slope monitoring and the planning of stabilization works in large hilly areas. The study is based on the analysis of geological and geomorphological maps, identification of catchment areas, and the division of catchment areas into primary (with main stream) and secondary (without main stream) sub-basins. Attention was focused on secondary sub-basins and their characteristics: lithology; an ad hoc parameter q (related to the average rainfall, the size of the basin, and the width of the toe section), and the average slope inclination i. The technique presented enables the “landslide hazard curve,” unique for a given formation in homogenous areas with similar rainfall conditions and seismicity, to be drawn in a chart which features q and i. All the ascertained and assumed unstable areas represented in the chart are located above the landslide hazard curve.?The study was carried out scientifically by taking into account engineering aspects (geological, geomorphological, hydrological, and geotechnical), which influence slope stability. A numerical model is presented as the basis for the study of surface waves generated by bank and bottom landslides in rivers. The flow is assumed to be properly modeled by the shallow water equations. The solid movement is introduced in the model as an external action, and assumed rigid and impervious. Two situations are identified in the flow subsequent to a solid movement: longitudinal and transversal sliding. A discussion on the modeling difficulties associated with the latter is included. Airborne lidar (light detection and ranging) was used to create a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and produce
landslide hazard maps of the University of California, San Francisco Parnassus Campus. The lidar DEM consisted of nearly 2.8
million interpolated elevation values covering approximately100 ha and posted on an 0.6 m horizontal grid, from which a set
of 16 maps was produced. The first subset of maps showed aspects of the topography useful for landslide mapping, an engineering
geological map and a qualitative slope hazard map. The second subset consisted of physics-based probabilistic landslide hazard
maps for wet static, wet seismic, and dry seismic conditions. This case history illustrates the utility of lidar-based products,
supplemented by field-based geological observations and physics-based probabilistic slope stability modeling, for the evaluation
of existing and potential slope stability hazards on a steep and heavily forested site.

When assessing the impact of extreme events, it is often not just a single component, but the combined behavior of several components which is important. Statistical modeling using multivariate generalized Pareto (GP) distributions constitutes the multivariate analogue of univariate peaks over thresholds modeling, which is widely used in finance and engineering. We develop general methods for construction of multivariate GP distributions and use them to create a variety of new statistical models. A censored likelihood procedure is proposed to make inference on these models, together with a threshold selection procedure, goodness-of-fit diagnostics, and a computationally tractable strategy for model selection. The models are fitted to returns of stock prices of four UK-based banks and to rainfall data in the context of landslide risk estimation. Supplementary materials and codes are available online. 相似文献
