Analysis of electro‐optical properties of polymer‐stabilized OCB and the application to TFT‐LCDs

Abstract— A 9‐in. full‐color polymer‐stabilized OCB TFT‐LCD with stable bend alignment in the absence of an electric field was developed. The condition of the polymer stabilization, the characteristics of UV‐curable monomers, and their influence on the configurations of the polymer network in the cell were studied. Possible models of the configuration were proposed and their relationship to the electro‐optical properties was analyzed using a novel simulation method considering the distribution of anchoring effects from both alignment surfaces and the polymer network. It was suggested that a good performance such as high contrast ratio and fast response could be expected in the polymer network originating from newly developed monomers composed of multifunctional LC acrylates due to a relatively weak‐anchoring effect and presumably its localization near the alignment surfaces. By using the newly developed monomers under the optimized polymer‐stabilizing process, a high contrast ratio of 250:1 and fast response nearly equal to that of a conventional OCB cell were achieved.     

Progress in viewing‐angle properties of liquid‐crystal displays

Abstract— Viewing‐angle dependences of the contrast ratio and color shift of LCDs have been radically improved as evidenced by the increasing application of LCDs in high‐quality television. This paper describes the concept of optical compensation and the fundamental characteristics of the viewing‐angle property for various LC modes.     

A weakness in OCB3 used with short nonces allowing for a break of authenticity and confidentiality

OCB3 is a mature and provably secure authenticated encryption mode of operation which allows for associated data (AEAD). This note reports a small flaw in the security proof of OCB3 that may cause a loss of security in practice, even if OCB3 is correctly implemented in a trustworthy and nonce-respecting module. The flaw is present when OCB3 is used with short nonces. It has security implications that are worse than nonce-repetition as confidentiality and authenticity are lost until the key is changed. The flaw is due to an implicit condition in the security proof and to the way OCB3 processes nonces. Different ways to fix the mode are presented.     

The offset codebook (OCB) block cipher mode of operation for authenticated encryption

This article presents an overview of the concepts of and motivation for the OCB block cipher mode of operation. OCB is well suited for IoT, wireless, and other constrained devices where processing time and energy consumption are design issues. The article describes two versions of the OCB algorithm (OCB1 and OCB3) that have been widely accepted.     

Disentangling role perceptions: How perceived role breadth, discretion, instrumentality, and efficacy relate to helping and taking charge.

The objective of this study was to empirically disentangle role perceptions related to organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) that have been confounded in past research, investigate their unique relationships with both an affiliative (helping) and a challenging (taking charge) form of OCB, and determine their relative importance in explaining these 2 forms of OCB. The authors also examined whether role discretion and role breadth independently moderate the procedural justice-to-OCB relationship. The authors surveyed 225 engineers in India and their direct supervisors. The results showed that 3 of the 4 facets of OCB role perception explain unique variance in either helping or taking charge, and that role breadth moderates the relationships between procedural justice and both helping and taking charge. The role of authority power in explaining procedural fairness effects.

Building on fairness heuristic theory, fairness theory, and trust development models, we argue that unfairly enacted procedures decrease followers' trust in the authority particularly when authorities have high power over their followers. Moreover, we expected trust to mediate procedural fairness effects on followers' attitudes (authorities' legitimacy and charisma attributed to authorities) and organizational citizenship behavior. Procedural fairness effects on these variables, as mediated by trust, should therefore also be stronger when authority power is high. The results of a single- and multisource field study and a laboratory experiment supported these predictions. These studies support the role of authority power as a theoretically and practically relevant moderator of procedural fairness effects and show that its effectiveness is explained through trust in authorities. Generalized mixed-mode reflective LCDs with large cell gaps and high contrast ratios

Abstract— A generalized mixed twisted-nematic/birefringent-effect mode reflective LCD is presented. This new mode encompasses all previously published reflective nematic LCD modes and is clearly shown on the parameter space diagrams. We also discuss how to obtain operating conditions of this generalized mixed-mode display with large cell gaps, low color dispersion, and high contrast at low voltages. This operating mode is particularly suitable for reflective crystalline-silicon-backplane active-matrix LCDs.     

Leading by example: The case of leader OCB.

The importance of leading by personal example or role modeling for effective leadership has been recognized in many leadership theories. However, leaders' ability to influence group behavior through exemplary behavior has received little attention in empirical work. This study explores leading by example through theoretical development and empirical testing of a moderated mediation model of the potential effects of leader organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). This model suggests that a leader's OCB may promote group OCB directly and indirectly by enhancing the group's belief that OCB is worthy. It also specifies the moderators of the direct and indirect effects of leader OCB on group OCB. Data from 683 members of 67 intact work groups, 67 group managers, and their supervisors support the hypothesized model. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed. A new solution for splay‐to‐bend transition in OCB mode with a twisted area

Abstract— Quick, stable transition from splay‐to‐bend alignment in optically compensated bend (OCB) mode is crucial for practical use. This has been achieved by surface treating part of a pixel with a chiral dopant to induce a twist alignment while controlling the twist direction. The effectiveness of this new method was confirmed in a prototype TFT‐LCD panel.
