Methods of measuring topographical features of grinding wheels are reviewed. Each technique has advantages and limitations for resolution, measuring depth, ease of application, data analysis and interpretation. Results obtained vary according to the method and instrument employed. Advantages and difficulties experienced with different techniques are discussed. Different replication techniques and materials are compared and suggestions made. A set of parameters that describe the wheel and grain characteristics is defined. Experimental studies with grinding wheels having different structures are carried out in terms of observations and measurements of changes in wheel topography. Experimental results are analysed and discussed in relation to theoretical understanding of abrasive wear and loading.  相似文献

Vegetation structure retrieval accuracies from spaceborne Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data are affected by surface topography, background noise and sensor saturation. This study uses a physical approach to remove surface topography effect from lidar returns to retrieve vegetation height from ICESat/GLAS data over slope terrains. Slope-corrected vegetation heights from ICESat/GLAS data were compared to airborne Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS) (20 m footprint size) and small-footprint lidar data collected in White Mountain National Forest, NH. Impact of slope on LVIS vegetation height estimates was assessed by comparing LVIS height before and after slope correction with small-footprint discrete-return lidar and field data.Slope-corrected GLAS vegetation heights match well with 98 percentile heights from small-footprint lidar (R2 = 0.77, RMSE = 2.2 m) and top three LVIS mean (slope-corrected) heights (R2 = 0.64, RMSE = 3.7 m). Impact of slope on LVIS heights is small, however, comparison of LVIS heights (without slope correction) with either small footprint lidar or field data indicates that our scheme improves the overall LVIS height accuracy by 0.4-0.7 m in this region. Vegetation height can be overestimated by 3 m over a 15° slope without slope correction. More importantly, both slope-corrected GLAS and LVIS height differences are independent of slope. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the physical approach to remove surface topography from large footprint lidar data to improve accuracy of maximum vegetation height estimates.GLAS waveforms were compared to aggregated LVIS waveforms in Bartlett Experimental Forest, NH, to evaluate the impact of background noise and sensor saturation on vegetation structure retrievals from ICESat/GLAS. We found that GLAS waveforms with sensor saturation and low background noise match well with aggregated LVIS waveforms, indicating these waveforms capture vertical vegetation structure well. However, waveforms with large noise often lead to mismatched waveforms with LVIS and underestimation of waveform extent and vegetation height. These results demonstrate the quality of ICESat/GLAS vegetation structure estimates.  相似文献

Digital elevation models (DEMs) constitute a valuable source of data for a number of geoscience-related applications. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected and made available to the public the world's largest DEM (composed of billions of points) until that date. The SRTM DEM is stored on the NASA repository as a well-organized collection of flat files. The retrieval of this stored topographic information about a region of interest involves one selection of a proper list of files, their downloading, data filtering in the desired region, and their processing according to user needs. With the aim to provide an easier and faster access to this data by improving its further analysis and processing, we have indexed the SRTM DEM by means of a spatial indexing based on the kd-tree data structure, called the Q-tree. This paper is the first in a two-part series that describes the method followed to build an index on such huge amounts of data, minimizing the number of insert operations. We demonstrate that our method can build a very efficient space-partitioning index, with good performance in both point and range queries on the spatial data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only successful spatial indexing proposal in the literature that deals with such a huge volume of data.  相似文献

This study aims to contribute to the definition of a methodology, which can help to select a relevant roughness parameter with a view to describing the topography of orthopaedic bearing surfaces. In this investigation, the surface topography of a retrieved titanium alloy (TA6V) femoral head was characterized using visual inspection, optical microscopy and three-dimensional contacting profilometry. A numerical analysis of roughness measurements was then undertaken to assess in a first step the values of different roughness parameters of interest found in papers dealing with the topography of orthopaedic bearing surfaces. In a second step, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Computer-Based Bootstrap Method were combined to determine statistically, and without preconceived opinion, which of those parameters is the most relevant to describe the different investigated worn regions of the studied femoral head.  相似文献

Tissue engineering, which involves the creation of new tissue by the deliberate and controlled stimulation of selected target cells through a systematic combination of molecular and mechanical signals, usually involves the assistance of biomaterials-based structures to deliver these signals and to give shape to the resulting tissue mass. The specifications for these structures, which used to be described as scaffolds but are now more correctly termed templates, have rarely been defined, mainly because this is difficult to do. Primarily, however, these specifications must relate to the need to develop the right microenvironment for the cells to create new tissue and to the need for the interactions between the cells and the template material to be consistent with the demands of the new viable tissues. These features are encompassed by the phenomena that are collectively called biocompatibility. However, the theories and putative mechanisms of conventional biocompatibility (mostly conceived through experiences with implantable medical devices) are inadequate to describe phenomena in tissue-engineering processes. The present author has recently redefined biocompatibility in terms of specific materials- and biology-based pathways; this opinion paper places tissue-engineering biocompatibility mechanisms in the context of these pathways.  相似文献

Various processes can occur when paints are in contact with moisture, such as ingress of water and aggressive ions into the coating. As a consequence, the microstructure and properties of the paints can be affected. The present study combines electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the barrier property of waterborne and solventborne coatings on mild steel, paying particular attention to the occurrences in the first 24 h after contact between the coating surface and electrolyte. The sequential in situ AFM images revealed that changes on the order of hundreds of nanometres at the coating surface have occurred shortly after the exposure to the electrolytes. EIS observations for the clear waterborne alkyd coating revealed a rise in the |Z|0.015Hz and a decrease in the coating capacitance after a few hours of exposure. Evidences that water uptake caused swelling of the coating and promoted the closure/blockage of pores were given by means of in situ AFM. The solventborne alkyd emulsion has demonstrated lower reactivity to the presence of the electrolyte and a correlation between the coating resistance and defects/pores evolution is suggested.  相似文献

The surface texture characterization of laminate composites is complex due to its heterogeneous structure and to the different stratified surface properties. Profile roughness parameters are highly impacted by those different layer properties, and their distributions are relatively spread out. A new filtering technique is proposed to improve the surface roughness parameter efficiency. To present issues from current filtering methods and to highlight this new approach, profile surface roughness taken from trimmed carbon fibre reinforced plastics samples are inspected in the composite stacking sequence using a contact profilometer. For each measurement, several roughness parameters are calculated. The efficiency of different filtering techniques is investigated through the roughness parameters distribution, calculated for up- and down-milling and for different tool wear. The new proposed technique, based on the separate characterization of plateaus and large deep valleys of the composite surface profiles, is found to be particularly efficient on the down-milling face.  相似文献

A range of coatings from a water based suspension of anatase has been prepared by suspension high velocity oxy-fuel spraying with the aim to study effects of heat power of the flame on phase composition, microstructure and surface topography. Three most commonly used approaches of quantitative phase analysis have been scrutinized with respect to their applicability and as some of the coatings showed presence of preferred orientation and it was argued that quantitative Rietveld refinement is the most accurate method for phase composition determination. Coatings had a layered duplex anatase/rutile microstructure with fraction of rutile increasing exponentially with heat power. Spraying at the lower heat power led to a lower surface roughness and higher power resulted in surfaces with pronounced humps, which were distributed homogeneously on the surface. The emergence of humps is related to an increase in macroscopic surface area of up to 30% with respect to the flat coating.  相似文献

This paper describes the design and validation of an upgraded grinding wheel scanner system that controls the position of a Nanovea CHR-150 Axial Chromatism sensor along the x- and y-directions of the wheel surface to measure and characterize wheel surface topography. The scanner features a novel homing system that enables the wheel to be removed from the scanner, used on a grinding machine and then re-mounted and re-homed so that the same location on the wheel surface can be repeatedly measured and monitored. The average standard deviation for homing was 27.6 μm and 19.3 μm in the x- and y-directions, respectively, which is more than adequate for typical area scans of 25 mm2. After homing, the scanner was able to repeatedly measure features that were similar in size to an abrasive grain (∼200 μm diameter) with an average error of 9.3 μm and 5.9 μm in the x- and y-directions, respectively. The resulting topography measurements were compared with Scanning Electron Microscope images to demonstrate the accuracy of the scanner. A custom particle filter was developed to process the resulting data and a novel analysis technique involving the rate of change of measured area was proposed as a method for establishing the reference wheel surface from which desired wheel topography results can be reported such as the number of cutting edges, cutting edge width and cutting edge area as a function of radial depth.  相似文献
