Reviews the book, Initiating and administering guidance services, by S. A. Hamrin (1953). Hamrin addressed this book to school principals and superintendents because "no worthwhile program of guidance services can thrive or even exist long without sympathetic understanding and encouragement of school administrators. It is hoped that this volume will aid in promoting such understanding and assistance." This book appears to be a combination of Hamrin's lectures illustrated by excerpts from term papers written by Hamrin's students. The reviewer was annoyed by the interspersion of the amateurish illustrations in the midst of Hamrin's expert and mature discussions of the various topics. Hamrin has demonstrated in his previous books that his own experience has been rich and sufficiently varied to provide pertinent illustrative material. This study examines the nature and impact of workplace mistreatment, excluding sexual harassment and physical contact, experienced by administrators of a hospital. Factor analyses show that mistreatment behaviours are reflected by three dimensions: verbal abuse, work obstruction, and emotional neglect. Verbal abuse is regarded as an interpersonal form of mistreatment whereas obstruction and neglect are considered as organizational forms. Administrators reported having experienced organizational mistreatment more frequently than interpersonal mistreatment. We then examined relationships among mistreatment, context support, employee psychological well-being, organizational commitment, work satisfaction, and intent to leave. As predicted, supportive work environments mediate between workplace mistreatment and well-being, commitment and work satisfaction but, surprisingly, not the intention to leave the organization. 近几年来,高职院校迅速发展的同时带来了高职院校领导干部选拔,培养等干部管理的一些问题。公立院校与社会力量兴办院校之间界线不清,高职院校领导干部的条件要求不够明确等。是该类院校领导干部管理问题产生的主要原因。做好高职院校的干部管理工作可以通过划分学校类型,实行分级管理,建立行会及校院长人才市场等途径,以不断优化干部的结构,提高队伍整体素质。  相似文献

The term campus climate has become commonplace within higher education. However, there is little consensus on how best to define and measure it. Our study is a qualitative content analysis of 118 campus climate studies. Guided by the conceptual understanding of campus climate put forth by Peterson and Spencer (1990), we explore the nature of campus climate research based upon studies found in a clearinghouse database of faculty campus climate studies. We found that those conducting studies are most often institutional employees. There was no standardization of design or instrumentation in these studies. Studies did not rely on a single definition of campus climate or on any set of best practices for assessing campus climate. Additionally, studies explored various aspects and constituents of the campus--both in and out of the classroom, and for the working environment for faculty and students and occasionally staff and administrators. Implications and specific recommendations for conducting campus climate research based upon extant literature and on findings from the study are included.
