Despite the universal and understandable distress associated with the death of a child from pediatric illness, do psychologists help surviving families in ways that match their need for assistance? Many families do not seek psychological help and cope adaptively with their loss. Indications for psychotherapy with bereaved families are based largely on experience with families who engage in treatment and who have greater distress. Other families may not receive sufficient services but are at risk for ongoing difficulties and unlikely to engage in treatment. Recent research has indicated that many people faced with highly aversive events suffer only minor, transient disruptions in functioning and retain a capacity for positive affect and experiences. This article reports 2 studies that replicate and extend these findings among bereaved parents, spouses, and caregivers of a chronically ill life partner using a range of self-report and objective measures of adjustment. Resilience was evidenced in half of each bereaved sample when compared with matched, nonbereaved counterparts and 36% of the caregiver sample in a more conservative, repeated-measures ipsative comparison. Resilient individuals were not distinguished by the quality of their relationship with spouse/partner or caregiver burden but were rated more positively and as better adjusted by close friends. You can survive after death in various kinds of artifacts. You can survive in diaries, photographs, sound recordings, and movies. But these artifacts record only superficial features of yourself. We are already close to the construction of programs that partially and approximately replicate entire human lives (by storing their memories and duplicating their personalities). A digital ghost is an artificially intelligent program that knows all about your life. It is an animated auto-biography. It replicates your patterns of belief and desire. You can survive after death in a digital ghost. We discuss a series of digital ghosts over the next 50 years. As time goes by and technology advances, they are progressively more perfect replicas of the lives of their original authors.

Automatic face recognition is a widely used biometric identification method, since it is based on standard video surveillance systems and does not require the collaboration of the person to be recognised. The recognition process involves decisions based on the face measurement results. The reliability and robustness of the recognition procedure are critical factors, strongly affected by influence quantities, such as face-camera relative orientation and position, illumination and expression. To improve performance it makes sense to imitate the recognition process in humans, who succeed in recognising faces even from poor quality images. It is therefore interesting to investigate the perception of similarity between faces, with the aim of gaining insight into the process of human face recognition. We report on an investigation that has been carried out by original methods developed in our laboratory for the direct measurement of perceptual quantities. Such methods have been implemented for two complementary recognition procedures, based either on the global appearance of a face or on the detection of specific repere points.  相似文献

Fire risk perception and its influence on building evacuation were studied in order to improve building evacuation processes. The sample adopted in this study consisted of (i) laypersons, mostly elderly; (ii) healthcare professionals working with vulnerable individuals who live with disability on an everyday basis, for their point of view on disabled persons; (iii) fire victims for their experience (persons who suffered burns in a fire).Qualitative research was used to study fire risk perception and to understand the attitudes and behaviours of individuals. The information was collected during interviews following a questionnaire that combined questions of a general nature, questions referring to the fire and questions focused on the experience of evacuating a building.Results of this inductive, exploratory and qualitative method showed differences between the analysis of experts, the point of view of laypersons and the experience of fire victims. They also showed that risk perception is influenced by psychological, social, physical, political (here regulatory and normative) and cultural factors. Fire risk perception is based on the individual-environment-risk paradigm. Among the factors characterising risk perception, we noted the preponderant role of trust emerges, as well as that of the human environments (daily and emergency), the physical environment (building) and the climate of safety in which the event takes place. These different dimensions of fire risk perception show that it is a combination of psychometric and cultural paradigms. Building evacuation is seen as a psychological process involving both emotion and cognition.The resulting model aims to improve the understanding of a building evacuation process and to provide tools to anticipate crises.  相似文献

Jungian family sandplay (JFS) with bereaved clients, especially young children, may assist family members in communicating their intrapersonal world of grief through symbolic methods. Specifically, play therapists using JFS provide the opportunity for children to share feelings with caretakers that may be developmentally difficult to verbalize. With JFS, children use nonthreatening images to portray feelings and struggles associated with the death of a loved one. The focus of this article is the importance of including caretakers and family members in bereaved children’s sandplay. In addition, we include a clinical vignette to illuminate the potential benefits of incorporating JFS with bereaved children. We conclude with implications for play therapists.
