E-learning systems have gone through a radical change from the initial text-based environments to more stimulating multimedia
systems. Such systems are Collaborative Virtual Environments, which could be used in order to support collaborative e-learning
scenarios. The main aim of this paper is to aid educational designers in selecting, designing and evaluating three dimensional
collaborative virtual environments in order to gain the pedagogical benefits of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning.
Therefore, this paper initially discusses the potential of three dimensional networked virtual environments for supporting
collaborative learning. Furthermore, based on a two-step platform selection process this paper (a) presents and compares three
dimensional multi-user virtual environments for supporting collaborative learning and (b) validates the most promising solution
against a set of design principles for educational virtual environments. According to these principles, an educational environment
has been implemented on top of the selected platform in order to support collaborative e-learning scenarios. The design of
this environment is also presented. In addition, this paper presents the results of three small scale studies carried out
in a tertiary education department, to assess the educational environment. This environment has been evaluated based on a
hybrid evaluation methodology for uncovering usability problems, collecting further requirements for additional functionality
to support collaborative virtual learning environments, and determining the appropriateness of different kinds of learning
scenarios.

This paper reports on an aspect of the EC funded Argunaut project which researched and developed awareness tools for moderators of online dialogues. In this study we report on an investigation into the nature of creative thinking in online dialogues and whether or not this creative thinking can be coded for and recognized automatically such that moderators can be alerted when creative thinking is occurring or when it has not occurred after a period of time. We outline a dialogic theory of creativity, as the emergence of new perspectives from the interplay of voices, and the testing of this theory using a range of methods including a coding scheme which combined coding for creative thinking with more established codes for critical thinking, artificial intelligence pattern-matching techniques to see if our codes could be read automatically from maps and ‘key event recall’ interviews to explore the experience of participants. Our findings are that: (1) the emergence of new perspectives in a graphical dialogue map can be recognized by our coding scheme supported by a machine pattern-matching algorithm in a way that can be used to provide awareness indicators for moderators; (2) that the trigger events leading to the emergence of new perspectives in the online dialogues studied were most commonly disagreements and (3) the spatial representation of messages in a graphically mediated synchronous dialogue environment such as Digalo may offer more affordance for creativity than the much more common scrolling text chat environments. All these findings support the usefulness of our new account of creativity in online dialogues based on dialogic theory and demonstrate that this account can be operationalised through machine coding in a way that can be turned into alerts for moderators. 相似文献

Per definition, CSCL research deals with the data of individuals nested in groups, and the influence of a specific learning
setting on the collaborative process of learning. Most well-established statistical methods are not able to analyze such nested
data adequately. This article describes the problems which arise when standard methods are applied and introduces multilevel
modelling (MLM) as an alternative and adequate statistical approach in CSCL research. MLM enables testing interactional effects
of predictor variables varying within groups (for example, the activity of group members in a chat) and predictors varying
between groups (for example, the group homogeneity created by group members’ prior knowledge). So it allows taking into account
that an instruction, tool or learning environment has different but systematic effects on the members within the groups on
the one hand and on the groups on the other hand. The underlying statistical model of MLM is described using an example from
CSCL. Attention is drawn to the fact that MLM requires large sample sizes which are not provided in most CSCL research. A
proposal is made for the use of some analyses which are useful. 相似文献
