White sintered glass-ceramic tiles with improved thermal insulation properties for building applications

In order to provide a thermal barrier in an arid environment, highly reflective coatings were deposited on porous substrates made of natural raw materials from Saudi Arabia. Although highly reflective coatings inhibit heat absorption from the incoming sunlight, the body of conventional ceramic tiles warms up to environmental temperature through conduction, convection and radiation. A strategy to reduce the penetration of this heat into the building is to use a highly porous substrate, which reduces the thermal conductivity of the tile, coupled with a highly reflective glaze. The approach leads to the concept of “cool” tiles, aimed at improving the thermal efficiency of buildings. The present paper provides a first example, based on layered wollastonite-hardystonite glass-ceramics developed by double pressing of glass powders and additives followed by sinter-crystallization.

CFD modelling of a “stabilized cool flame” reactor with reduced mechanisms and a direct integration approach

Controlled liquid fuels droplet evaporation under “stabilized cool flame” (SCF) conditions can lead to a homogeneous, heated air-fuel vapor mixture that can be subsequently either burnt or utilized in fuel reforming of fuel cell applications. The work focuses on the numerical modelling of diesel spray evaporation in an “SCF” reactor, operating under atmospheric pressure conditions. An “in-house” developed CFD code is used to predict flow characteristics. The complex oxidative phenomena encountered under SCF conditions are accounted for by implementing two reduced chemical kinetic schemes consisting of five (S5) and seven (S7) active species. Species conservation differential equations as well as reaction and heat release rates provided by the S5 and S7 schemes are solved in each computational cell via a direct integration approach. Comparison with experiments indicates that the implemented computational approach can successfully capture the major characteristics of the reactor's thermal field, especially when increasing air inlet temperatures.     

Estimating thermal performance of cool colored paints

The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal performance of cool colored acrylic paints containing infrared reflective pigments in comparison to conventional colored acrylic paints of similar colors (white, brown and yellow) applied on sheets of corrugated fiber cement roofing. Evaluated properties are: color according to ASTM D 2244-89, the UV/VIS/NIR reflectance according to ASTM E 903-96, and thermal performance by exposure to infrared radiation emitted from a lamp with the measurement of surface temperatures of the specimens with thermocouples connected to a data logging system.Results demonstrated that the cool colored paint formulations produced significantly higher NIR reflectance than conventional paints of similar colors, and that the surface temperatures were more than 10 °C lower than those of conventional paints when exposed to infrared radiation. The study shows that cool paints enhance thermal comfort inside buildings, which can reduce air conditioning costs.     

Experimental study on cool storage air-conditioning system with spherical capsules packed bed

An experimental investigation on operation characteristics of cool storage air-conditioning system with spherical capsules packed bed was performed in this paper. The experimental system of cool storage air-conditioning system with spherical capsules packed bed was set up. The performance parameters such as the evaporation pressure and the condensation pressure of refrigeration system, the refrigeration capacity and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system, the cool storage rate and the cool storage capacity in the cool storage tank, the inlet and outlet coolant temperatures in the cool storage tank during charging period, and the cool discharge rate and the cool discharge capacity in the cool storage tank, the outlet and inlet coolant temperatures in the cool storage tank and the outlet and inlet air temperatures in room fan coil unit during discharging period were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the cool storage air-conditioning system with spherical capsules packed bed has better performances and can stably work during charging and discharging period.
