Housing Tenure: Pacific Families in New Zealand

Home ownership has been associated with health, social and economic benefits. However, a decline in ownership has been observed over the past decade in New Zealand. Minority groups, including Pacific people, have been disadvantaged in the housing sector. This study investigated housing tenure and the relationship between tenure and health among mothers of a birth cohort of Pacific children in New Zealand. Findings showed that most families lived in state or private rental accommodation with few (15.4 per cent) owning their own homes. Homeowners were more likely to be older, partnered and have higher incomes. Better mental health was observed for homeowners compared to renters. Findings can inform housing and public health policy for Pacific families.     

Effects of home preparation on pesticide residues in cabbage

Experiment was carried out to evaluate the pesticides (chlorpyrifos, p,p-DDT, cypermethrin, chlorothalonil) residue levels in cabbage in the process of home preparation by washing with different concentrations of acetic acid and sodium chlorine, and tap water, preserving in refrigerator, and stir-frying for different time. Results showed that washing by tap water and/or detergent solution for cooking are necessary to decrease the concentration of pesticide residues in cabbage. Washing with acetic acid solutions (at 10% concentration for 20 min) caused 79.8%, 65.8%, 74.0% and 75.0% loss of the above pesticides, respectively. Washing with NaCl solutions (at 10% concentration for 20 min) produced 67.2%, 65.0%, 73.3% and 74.1% loss, respectively, and washing by tap water (for 20 min) were 17.6%, 17.1%, 19.1% and 15.2% loss, respectively. The reductions due to the refrigeration (for 48 h) were 3.4%, 2.6%, 3.1% and 3.6%, respectively, and those due to the stir-frying (for 5 min) were 86.6%, 67.5%, 84.7% and 84.8%, respectively. The data indicated that washing by detergent solutions and stir-frying of cabbage are the most effective home preparations for the elimination of pesticide residues.

智能家居有广阔的应用前景.针对传统家居控制上的缺陷,采用B/S架构设计了智能家居管理系统,采用ZigBee无线网络实现对各类家居设备的信息采集和指令控制.用SQL Server 2005数据库管理系统与家庭网关,进行数据的传递与接收.通过Web浏览器,用户可以实现对智能家居系统的管理.     

A low-cost real time virtual system for postural stability assessment at home

Background and objective

The degeneration of the balance control system in the elderly and in many pathologies requires measuring the equilibrium conditions very often. In clinical practice, equilibrium control is commonly evaluated by using a force platform (stabilometric platform) in a clinical environment.In this paper, we demonstrate how a simple movement analysis system, based on a 3D video camera and a 3D real time model reconstruction of the human body, can be used to collect information usually recorded by a physical stabilometric platform.

Methods

The algorithm used to reconstruct the human body model as a set of spheres is described and discussed. Moreover, experimental measurements and comparisons with data collected by a physical stabilometric platform are also reported. The measurements were collected on a set of 6 healthy subjects to whom a change in equilibrium condition was stimulated by performing an equilibrium task.

Results

The experimental results showed that more than 95% of data collected by the proposed method were not significantly different from those collected by the classic platform, thus confirming the usefulness of the proposed system.

Conclusions

The proposed virtual balance assessment system can be implemented at low cost (about 500$) and, for this reason, can be considered a home use medical device. On the contrary, astabilometric platform has a cost of about 10,000$ and requires periodical calibration. The proposed system does not require periodical calibration, as is necessary for stabilometric force platforms, and it is easy to use. In future, the proposed system with little integration can be used, besides being an emulator of a stabilometric platform, also to recognize and track, in real time, head, legs, arms and trunk, that is to collect information actually obtained by sophisticated optoelectronic systems.

基于PC的智能家电无线红外遥控系统

基于PC的智能家电遥控系统是以单片机CC2530为核心驱动、以YS-IR01F为红外学习核心模块的控制系统,该系统包括三部分,分别为用户控制界面、网关模块以及底层红外驱动模块,该系统可以通过对家用红外遥控数据的学习进而实现利用PC用户界面控制包括电视、投影仪等普通家电,初步实现家电智能化。满足一般家庭对智能家居的要求,方便人们的生活。     

白色家电互联协议的研究与实现

为了实现白色家电互联硬件成本最小化,本文研究和开发了简单、易于实现的白色家电互联协议,MCU作为控制中心,CC1101模块作为无线收发模块,2051作为终端节点处理器,建立了一个小型控制网络,从而实现白色家电的互联。实验结果表明:该系统能够满足互联的功能,并且出错率较低。     

基于Web_CORBA信息家电家庭网关的设计与实现

随着各种信息家电的出现及网络技术的发展,家电控制需要一个便捷有效的平台。本文提出了Web_CORBA家庭网关的设计构想,给出了信息家电的接口定义,采用CORBA-CGI方式最终实现了Internet远程控制,并以信息家电冰箱为例给出了具体的设计过程。
