A new way for constructing high accuracy shock-capturing generalized compact difference schemes

The generalized compact (GC) schemes and some of their important properties are presented. And a new way for constructing high order accuracy and high-resolution GC schemes is presented. The schemes constructed by using this way could satisfy some principles and demands prescribed in advance to ensure some desired properties to the schemes, such as the principle about suppression of the oscillations, the principle of stability, the order of accuracy and number of scheme points, etc. As two examples, a three-point third-order compact scheme and a three-point fifth-order GC scheme satisfying the principle about suppression of the oscillations and the principle of stability are described in this paper. Numerical results show that these schemes are shock-capturing. The time-dependent boundary conditions proposed by Thompson are well employed when the algorithm is applied to the Euler equations of gas dynamics. Fourier analysis shows that the resolution characteristics are spectral-like.

Heterogeneous asymmetric reactions. 23. Enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate over cinchonine- and α-isocinchonine-modified platinum catalysts

The enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate to (S)-ethyl lactate over cinchonine- and -isocinchonine-modified Pt/Al₂O₃ catalysts was studied as a function of modifier concentration and reaction temperature. The maximum enantioselectivities obtained under the applied mild conditions were 89% ee using cinchonine (0.014 mmoldm^–3, 1 bar H₂, 23°C, 6% AcOH in toluene), and 76% ee in the case of -isocinchonine (0.14 mmoldm^–3, 1 bar H₂, –10°C, 6% AcOH in toluene). Since -isocinchonine of rigid structure exists only in anti-open conformation these data provide additional experimental evidence to support the former suggestion concerning the dominating role of anti-open conformation in these cinchona-modified enantioselective hydrogenations.

The kinetics of hydrogen transport through amorphous Pd82−yNiySi18 alloys (y=0-32) by analysis of anodic current transient

Hydrogen transport through amorphous Pd_82−yNi_ySi₁₈ alloys (y=0-32) was investigated in 0.1 M NaOH solution by analysis of the anodic current transient. It was found that the anodic current transient shows the non-Cottrell behaviour, but its shape and value remain nearly constant regardless of the hydrogen discharging potential. From the coincidence of the anodic current transient theoretically calculated with that experimentally measured, it is suggested that the change in surface concentration of hydrogen with time is uniquely given by the rate of hydrogen transfer from absorbed state at the electrode sub-surface to adsorbed state on the electrode surface. This means that neither the ‘constraint of constant concentration’ nor the ‘constraint by Butler-Volmer behaviour’ is effective at the electrode surface during hydrogen extraction. On the basis of the theoretical current-time relation under the ‘constraint by hydrogen transfer of absorbed state to adsorbed state’, the hydrogen diffusivity was determined to have an almost constant value of (1.3±0.4)×10⁻⁸ cm² s⁻¹, irrespective of the Ni content and in the absence of Ni. On the other hand, it is inferred that the rate constant of hydrogen transfer decreases markedly with increasing Ni content due to the Ni(OH)₂ layer formed on the electrode surface.

Stability of iterative processes with errors for a system of nonlinear -accretive variational inclusions in Banach spaces

In this paper, by using the concept of (A,η)-accretive mappings and the new resolvent operator technique associated with (A,η)-accretive mappings, we introduce and study a system of general mixed quasivariational inclusions involving (A,η)-accretive mappings in Banach spaces, and construct a new perturbed iterative algorithm with mixed errors for this system of nonlinear (A,η)-accretive variational inclusions in q-uniformly smooth Banach spaces. Our results improve and generalize the corresponding results of recent works.
