American Psychological Foundation Awards for 1973: Gold Medal, Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology, and the National Media.

On August 28, 1973, at the annual meeting of the APA in Montreal, the American Psychological Foundation announced the recipients of the Gold Medal Award, the Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology Awards, and the National Media Awards. The presentations were made by Henry W. Riecken, President of the American Psychological Foundation (APF). Harry F. Harlow received the Gold Medal Award; James B. Maas and Frank J. McGuigan were given the Teaching Awards; and Gerald Jonas, ABC News and Jules Power Productions, the Great Atlantic Radio Conspiracy, Christine Darg, and Elliott Aronson were the recipients of the National Media Awards. Other members of the APF are Nicholas Hobbs, Gardner Lindzey (Vice-President}, Boris E. Cherney (Treasurer), George Miller, George Albee, William Bevan, Kenneth B. Little (Secretary), Kenneth B. -Fem-ale or -Mal-e Authorship?

Immediately after reading "The History of Psychology Revisited: Or, Up with Our Foremothers" (Bernstein- [fem] & Russo[fem], February 1974), which decried the inability of readers to determine whether a reference is authored by a male or a female, I read in the same issue of the American Psychologist "What Psychology Is About" (Hebb[mal], February 1974). The latter article mentioned the early Russian psychologist Shenger-Krestovnikova, of whom I have never heard. I am nevertheless sure that this psychologist was female because the Russian language distinguishes between male and female last-name endings. This suggests a much-needed repair to our method of citation. We should add, at the end of each name, a suffix to indicate sex. The author gives several suggestions for how to accomplish this. RefWorks Usage Patterns: Exploring the First Four Semesters of Use by Faculty,Graduate Students,and Undergraduates

This study explores citation management usage patterns of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. We analyze the temporal use of RefWorks with an eye toward informing reference services and instruction initiatives. The frequency and intensity of use allow us to glean an understanding of user groups on campus. While our findings for undergraduates and faculty conform to general assumptions, graduate students emerge as a group more similar to faculty than anticipated. Graduate students’ use of RefWorks is characterized by steady logins and large amounts of references; thus, suggesting that personalized instruction might benefit graduate students more than scheduled workshops.     

Commentary: Who measures those who measure? The future of assessing research activity in Canadian psychology.

The recent article in Canadian Psychology by Carleton, Peluso, and Asmundson (2010) assessing the research activity of Canadian psychology departments with graduate programmes has generated substantial feedback. We are very pleased to have provided not only an initial data set for review by departments and individuals, but also to have prompted what we believe is an important discussion. The current article responds to a thoughtful critique and extension of our initial work (Symons, 2011). Herein we address and expand on each of the comments raised by Symons in an attempt to fully delineate the successes and challenges for our profession as we take the next steps in this area of research. Also, in light of the review and other anecdotal feedback received to date, we make further recommendations for using the data available from the Web of Knowledge, the rankings we provided, and the data provided by Symons. The referencing of prior art documents in European patents and applications

This paper explains the nature, origin and extent of the various documents and other prior art that may be cited in the course of the procedure from the filing of an EP patent application, through the search report and ‘A’ publication stages, the examination stage, and the eventual grant or refusal. The implications of the much weaker “duty of candour” in the European system of granting a bundle of national patents, compared with the US system, are described.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of Web citations was performed to examine three aspects of scholarly and research communication: use of authoritative information, use of correct citation style, and availability of the cited sources for the purpose of verification. Results of the study indicate that a database or a repository of Web citations needs to be established.
