RefWorks Usage Patterns: Exploring the First Four Semesters of Use by Faculty,Graduate Students,and Undergraduates

This study explores citation management usage patterns of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. We analyze the temporal use of RefWorks with an eye toward informing reference services and instruction initiatives. The frequency and intensity of use allow us to glean an understanding of user groups on campus. While our findings for undergraduates and faculty conform to general assumptions, graduate students emerge as a group more similar to faculty than anticipated. Graduate students’ use of RefWorks is characterized by steady logins and large amounts of references; thus, suggesting that personalized instruction might benefit graduate students more than scheduled workshops.     

Commentary: Who measures those who measure? The future of assessing research activity in Canadian psychology.

The recent article in Canadian Psychology by Carleton, Peluso, and Asmundson (2010) assessing the research activity of Canadian psychology departments with graduate programmes has generated substantial feedback. We are very pleased to have provided not only an initial data set for review by departments and individuals, but also to have prompted what we believe is an important discussion. The current article responds to a thoughtful critique and extension of our initial work (Symons, 2011). Herein we address and expand on each of the comments raised by Symons in an attempt to fully delineate the successes and challenges for our profession as we take the next steps in this area of research. Also, in light of the review and other anecdotal feedback received to date, we make further recommendations for using the data available from the Web of Knowledge, the rankings we provided, and the data provided by Symons. American Psychological Foundation Awards for 1973: Gold Medal, Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology, and the National Media.

On August 28, 1973, at the annual meeting of the APA in Montreal, the American Psychological Foundation announced the recipients of the Gold Medal Award, the Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology Awards, and the National Media Awards. The presentations were made by Henry W. Riecken, President of the American Psychological Foundation (APF). Harry F. Harlow received the Gold Medal Award; James B. Maas and Frank J. McGuigan were given the Teaching Awards; and Gerald Jonas, ABC News and Jules Power Productions, the Great Atlantic Radio Conspiracy, Christine Darg, and Elliott Aronson were the recipients of the National Media Awards. Other members of the APF are Nicholas Hobbs, Gardner Lindzey (Vice-President}, Boris E. Cherney (Treasurer), George Miller, George Albee, William Bevan, Kenneth B. Little (Secretary), Kenneth B. -Fem-ale or -Mal-e Authorship?

Immediately after reading "The History of Psychology Revisited: Or, Up with Our Foremothers" (Bernstein- [fem] & Russo[fem], February 1974), which decried the inability of readers to determine whether a reference is authored by a male or a female, I read in the same issue of the American Psychologist "What Psychology Is About" (Hebb[mal], February 1974). The latter article mentioned the early Russian psychologist Shenger-Krestovnikova, of whom I have never heard. I am nevertheless sure that this psychologist was female because the Russian language distinguishes between male and female last-name endings. This suggests a much-needed repair to our method of citation. We should add, at the end of each name, a suffix to indicate sex. The author gives several suggestions for how to accomplish this. The referencing of prior art documents in European patents and applications

This paper explains the nature, origin and extent of the various documents and other prior art that may be cited in the course of the procedure from the filing of an EP patent application, through the search report and ‘A’ publication stages, the examination stage, and the eventual grant or refusal. The implications of the much weaker “duty of candour” in the European system of granting a bundle of national patents, compared with the US system, are described.     

Novel data structure and visualization tool for studying technology evolution based on patent information: The DTFootprint and the TechSpectrogram

We introduce a new, bespoke data structure to analyze and visualize the evolution of a technology. The technology under analysis is defined by a set of patents corresponding to a technical field, owned by a company or invented by a team of research. Our data structure, the Dynamic Technology Footprint –DTFootprint–, facilitates the analysis and visualization of trends and dynamics of a given technology, and therefore the evolution of a technical field, a company, or a team of people. A graphical tool based on our data structure is defined, it is named Technology Spectrogram –TechSpectrogram–, because it is inspired by the acoustic frequency spectrograms: as the acoustic frequency spectrograms visualize the dynamics of an acoustic wave showing the evolution of its frequency components our tool shows the dynamics of a technology showing the evolution of its technological components, which are represented by the whole set of IPC-codes. Our graphical tool, the TechSpectrogram is shown for some study cases, and its application to the history of technology and technology management are disclosed.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of Web citations was performed to examine three aspects of scholarly and research communication: use of authoritative information, use of correct citation style, and availability of the cited sources for the purpose of verification. Results of the study indicate that a database or a repository of Web citations needs to be established.     

A comparison of official abstracts and enhanced abstracts for patent search

The official abstracts published together with many patent applications are freely available for search, e.g. using patent office websites such as Espacenet or search engines. Some service providers also offer, for a price, their own enhanced abstracts of patent applications. The authors propose a way of making an objective comparison between searching using the official abstracts and using the enhanced abstracts. The advantages offered by enhanced abstracts will be explained and include simple benefits such as saving time in finding the relevant prior art, and more intricate ones such as better suitability for ranking techniques.     

Technology advances in sugarcane propagation: A patent citation study

Sugarcane propagation technologies have, in recent years, been the focus of interest of large corporations involved in the sugar and ethanol business. The objective of this study is to present the methodology used to identify the technology domain found in different sugarcane propagation technologies. The methodology was based on the bibliometric analysis of patents, including a meticulous selection of the most representative technologies used by the sugarcane market and the application of patent citation. The results report the process developed to identify a novel technology domain of high complexity involving different fields of science resulting in a set of sugar cane propagation technologies and show that the main technology advances have happened in the last decade (2005–2015), especially in seedling containers and the use of chemical compounds for seedling treatment. Further studies are recommended to help understand how these new technologies will impact the sugarcane production-chain in Brazil.     

我国金属材料及热处理研究现状分析--基于《金属热处理》2008-2012年载文、被引和装备广告信息统计结果

基于2008-2012年间在《金属热处理》发表论文的学科、资助基金、作者、机构、关键词、论文被引情况和热处理装备广告信息的统计结果，分析了目前我国金属材料及热处理的研究现状。金属、机械、电力、冶金、汽车及化工等学科成员在不同程度上都从事金属材料及热处理研究工作。国家自然科学基金是金属热处理研究的最大支持者。“显微组织”、“力学性能”、“热处理”和“失效分析”是主要研究内容；“硬度”、“耐磨性”和“耐蚀性”是着力提高的性能；“马氏体”是热门研究组织；“激光熔覆”、“涂层”和“时效”是工艺研究热点；江苏省和北京市是我国热处理装备研发、交易最活跃的省份。《金属热处理》的栏目设置结合生产实际，能及时准确反映产学研现状，在助推我国金属材料及热处理行业发展方面发挥着重要作用。
