From the awardee's citation: "For landmark contributions to our understanding of how sensory information is distributed and integrated within the brain. His discovery of multiple visual, somatosensory, and auditory areas, and of their hierarchical arrangement into sensory systems, has illuminated and transformed the study of perception; his specification of homologies among sensory areas across mammals has greatly enriched our knowledge of brain evolution; and his demonstrations of the plasticity of sensory areas in adult animals have revolutionized our appreciation of neural dynamics.
