Abstract: | The localization of alkaline phosphatase (Alpase) activity in the osteoclasts was examined cytochemically. Alpase activity was located in the basolateral membrane in mature osteoclasts having ruffled borders and clear zones, and also in the basolateral membrane in the osteoclasts lacking a ruffled border or a clear zone on the bone surface. But in the preosteoclasts situated away from the bone surface the enzyme activity was noted in the whole plasma membrane. These results suggest that the localization of Alpase activity may be altered in relation to the changes in morphology associated with the functional activity of the osteoclasts. |
