Abstract:In this paper, the explicit terms of the stiffness and mass matrices of a bench-marked strain based finite element 1 were derived and applied to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of elastic circular arches of various geometry and supporting conditions. The results show that such explicit element formulation can produce excellent convergency. The flexural and extensional components of the strain energy have also been separately defined and presented.
