Digital transformation of petroleum geophysical exploration:Towards the era of real-time data acquisition,automatic processing,and intelligent interpretation

Digital transformation has become a strategic choice for many industries and enterprises worldwide to enhance their competitiveness.Development goals in the long-term as well as the need for survival in the short-term have put the petroleum geophysical industry under enormous pressure.Undergoing a digital transformation may also be the key for this industry to withstand such pressure.In this paper,the theory and methods of digital transformation were briefly introduced,and the objectives,contents,and characteristics of the digital transformation of petroleum geophysical exploration were expounded.The key targets of this transformation can be summarized in terms of full-perception,full-connection,full-intelligence,full-scenario,whole-process,and“platformization.”Five key actions to realize the digital transformation were analyzed,which can be summarized as follows:building a geophysical data acquisition system based on the Internet of Things,building digital infrastructure for geophysical exploration,building digital technologies and application platforms,building data resource sharing and digital service environments,and building drones and robots for petroleum geophysical exploration.Furthermore,the change of business process model brought about by the digital transformation was prospected.In particular,this change relates to the implementation of real-time data acquisition,automatic processing,and intelligent interpretation.Finally,the challenges in implementing the digital transformation were analyzed.These include the challenges in terms of planning,implementation of safeguard measures,construction of the digital platforms,and automation of the core technologies and key components.
