Abstract:It was found that the average size of dicalcium phosphate (DCP) particles precipitated in the presence of fluoride ions was smaller than the particle size of DCP crystals precipitated from pure solutions. This special effect of fluoride ions on the precipitation of DCP was investigated by turbidimetric measurements, by Laser Doppler spectroscopy and by Scanning Electron Microscope inspection. The effect is ascribed to the formation of calcium fluoride particles at a very early stage of the reaction, which subsequently act as substrates for heterogeneous nucleation of DCP, thus increasing the number density of DCP crystals and reducing their average size.
