City Renewal and History Continuity

Analyses on the historical, social, cutural and economical fartors in the course of development of Shenyang city, and the form and characteristics of the city's overall arrangement are presented in this paper. Some superficial views on how to protect the historical style and cultural features during the course of city renewal are proposed as follows: 1. Taking the Imperial palace of the Qing Dynasty as example, the paper analyses the influences of the building group space arrangement and the city's communication management to the historical style and features of the old city. It is proposed that an old-city-protection programme, such as the delimitation of key regions of protection and regions of environmental control and protection, should be drawn up, so as to preserve the environment design effect of the historic sites as a whole, and to control properly the holding capacity of the environment. 2. Historical traditions should be carried forward and local features should be preserved. Architectural creations should pay great atlention to things which are of visual and cultural significance in the original evironment. In the renewal or rebuilding course, it is not to do simple restoration in old ways, but to extcact and to imagine the essence of the old things so as to form something that can reflect the traditional, historical and relatively new architectural style. 3. To protect historically famous city of culture is not only to preserve the architectural style and features of our own nationalty, bat is also to discover, to evaluate and to protect valuable evironment of modern history (including foreign architectural culture). Buildings that can reflect the city's differeut developing stages should be preserved in its true colours so as to make people be experienced with the historical remoteness and continuity of the city.
