Abstract: | A study has been made of Danto Koruntz (Danto International Ltd.), a natural material now beginning to find use in wear applications. Its microstructure is described and its density, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, hardness, elastic constants, flexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture are reported. Compared to a typical man-made 95% dense sintered wear alumina, which is somewhat harder and tougher and considerably stronger and stiffer, Danto Koruntz is much less erosion resistant and exhibits qualitatively different thermal shock behaviour. When slid on itself, Danto Koruntz exhibits a slightly lower coefficient of friction than does the alumina. |
