Cooling towers frequently consist of wood. Because of its low natural durability and the hazards of infection by the soft-rot fungi associated, wood preservation is principally necessary. So far an up-to-date review about the past developments of wood preservation in connection with cooling towers appeared to be lacking. Discussed are various types of cooling towers, wood species used, wood preparation, experience with applied wood preservatives, methods of impregnation as to absorption and penetration of preservatives as well as the issue of possible water pollution. The depth of penetration for constructional timber has to be improved.
