Develop effective system for China barley variety selection, production and sale, and information dissemination

China beer industry has kept dramatical increase since 1980th and achieved the largest output in the world with 40 million tons product annually. China mainly has three beer barley planting regions, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, north-west and northeast, which do a great contribution to the beer industry development. However, the barley industry is still unable to support beer industry growing. Although the amount of supply increases with demand, the market share of domestic barley once decreased from 100% to 50%, therefore, the price of barley in China market is affected by both domestic produc-tion and global market. Because of green house effect, the climate change influences on agriculture. At the background of poor harvest caused by drought in some exporting countries, the domestic barley supply be-comes unable to meet demand that consequantly promotes price rising. Therefore, numer-ous malt and beer producers have realised the importance of developing stable produc-tion base for China barley industry. Although the industry has opportunities, China beer bar-ley still has to make improvement in many respects compared to imported barley products, such as variety breeding, quality, cost control, industrial operations and etc. Thus, developing effective system for China barley variety selection, produc-tion and sale, and information dissemination becomes imperative. Specifically, the system is consist of three parts con-structed under the government guidelines. Firstly, organise a group of experts to carry out the evaluation of barley varieties from long term, establish scientific evaluation procedure and standard, and organise a series of prospec-tive research. Secondly, select suitable planting regions, establish quality control system, conduct standardised production, and promote large-scale planting and indus-trial operation to ensure quality and trim cost. Thirdly, collect and publish information timely on the planting situation and market trend as well as carry out the neces-sary analysis of demand and supply.
