Review on Using Biological Methods to Minimize Sludge Reduction

The treatment and disposal of excess sludge represented a bottleneck in wastewater treatment plants(WWTP) worldwide,due to environmental,economic,social and legal factors.Cost of sludge disposal accounted for 50%～60% of total wastewater treatment,so water pollution control was converted to waste solid treatment.Therefore,it was very meaningful to develop sludge minimization technologies.In comparison to physical and chemical ways,biological method was more attractive,because it was more effective,low-cost and pollution-free.So the sludge reduction using biological ways were discussed,including S-ET,addition of biological preparations,using predation of aquatic worms to reduce excess sludge(suspended worms,immobilized worms).Moreover,the basic theories,research progress and advantages and disadvantages of each technology were also discussed.
