Surface melting of cast iron with a high-power laser beam

Abstract:Samples of cast iron were covered with an alloying material, Ti, Cr, Si, Vor Cb, and irradiated with a 2.5 kW laser beam. Partial melting of the sample surface was observed, and the alloying element dissolved. The carbide structure in the resolidified region was governed by the alloy addition. The effect of parameters such as beam diameter, scanning rate, power and alloy content have been investigated and the crack frequency evaluated.
