Competition Among Wireless Access Technologies

The short-distance (<300 m) wireless access technologies, especially Wi-Fi (IEEE E802.11, WLAN), have been rapidly developed and become strong rivals to access technologies such as 2.5G (GPRS), 3G, 4G, WAP, Bluetooth and infrared. And in the battle for "The Last Mile", WiMax (IEEE 802.16, WWAN) has become a powerful competitor to the wired broadband subcarrier (DSL) access and optical access technologies. Meanwhile, Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology has become the hot spot of current wireless access technology since it can provide users with more convenient high-speed multimedia access modes. The paper introduces the latest development of wireless access technologies, along with relevant standards, and also discusses issues related to information security.
