Abstract: | Transferability – a fundamental problem for fatigue life prediction Frequently specimen fatigue data have to be applied for fatigue life assessment of components and structures. It has to be assured that such data are relevant for the component under consideration. Equally it has to be assured that constant amplitude S-N data can be used for fatigue assessment in the case of spectrum loading. It is shown that application of transfer functions which are often of empirical nature requires an understanding of basic principles of material and component behaviour. Life prediction concepts should acknowledge the existence and relative portion of the crack initiation and crack propagation phases which are dominated by different mechanisms. |
