Abstract: | The hypothesis (R. J. Davidson, see record 80-00391; M. Kinsbourne, 1978) that hemispheric lateralization of positive and negative emotions reflects the organization of approach and withdrawal responses was examined. Left-sided facial contractions, which activate the right hemisphere and induce negative emotions, facilitated finger extension (a withdrawal response). and right-sided contractions, which activate the left hemisphere and induce positive emotions, facilitated finger flexion (an approach response) and retarded the finger extension (withdrawal) response. Contractions influenced only the ipsilateral finger (controlled by the activated hemisphere). Facilitation results were consistent with the hypothesis. Retardation of withdrawal may reflect reciprocal inhibition between responses or greater susceptibility of withdrawal to emotional variables.
