A programmed controlled temperature microscope stage

The construction, and testing, of a programmed controlled temperature stage for optical microscopy is described. The stage is shown to be capable of attaining temperatures between 160 K and 373 K, and of providing repeatable heating and cooling rates up to, and in excess of 100 K min^?1. It is also capable of providing stable temperature holds.
