Abstract: | The paper discusses the conditions under which road and rail public service vehicles generally operate and the effect of such conditions on exterior paintwork. Washing and cleaning methods required to maintain paintwork in good condition are described, and, in the case of railway coaches, the formulae of some typical cleaning solutions are quoted. The problem of intervals between repaintings is discussed and examples given of prevalent practice; paint specification, the examination and testing of paint samples, and the maintenance of colour-standards are also dealt with. The paper further describes durability testing from the laboratory stage to that of shop and service conditions and the use and value of the “service test.” Other sections are concerned with the repainting of road and rail vehicles and the comparative economics of brush, normal-spray and hot-spray systems. |
