Abstract: | The application to turbulent combustion of the technique of conditional sampling, well-known in experimental turbulence research, is reviewed. The case is presented for more detailed, more informative data from experiments involving turbulent reacting flows available from the permanent recording of the output from various sensors. The variety of treatments of data recorded in permanent form is shown to expand the information which can be extracted from an experiment, information which can be used in coordinating theoretical studies and in adding to our knowledge of the turbulent processes involved. The theoretical structure within which experiments in turbulent combustion can presently be carried out and examples of applications of conditional sampling to experimental turbulence and turbulent combustion are discussed. |
