Abstract: | A method is presented whereby various potential contributions to the toughness of a polymer containing short brittle fibres can be quantified. It relies on a model for predicting the cumulative probability distribution of fibre pull-out lengths. The method reveals that toughness increases to a maximum value with increasing fibre length. Good agreement between theory and experiment supports the validity of our approach. |
