Complexities of Architecture and the Multi-role Architects

Taking Leon Battista Alberti as the key figure, the article exams Alberti＇s multiple roles as artistic consultant, mathematician and engineer, scholar and humanist, architect and project leader. Comparing his career with other architects whose success is attributable to achievements in related fields other than architecture, such as philosophy, civil engineering, drawing and sculpture, crafts and tectonic practice in ancient and modern times, the article argues that the architect＇s multiple roles and knowledge beyond the disciplinary boundaries of architecture of today could be key to a fuller understanding of architecture.
