Abstract: | We use autobiographical stories to explore the boundaries between the design and use of computer-based office work systems in the US and Great Britain. Office automation systems were introduced in the 1970s and microcomputers and local networks in the early 1980s. In both periods, gender relations in the workplace were significant in the construction of boundaries between design and use. |
