Development of PDC Bit with Axe-shaped Teeth and its Application in East China Sea

The PDC bits used in many wells in the East China Sea had low ROP and small footage in the process of drilling deep formation. After the bits were pulled out,it was found that the cutting teeth had been worn severely. Therefore,on the basis of analyzing in detail the service conditions of PDC bits used in deep formation of the East China Sea,mechanical and hydraulic designs were performed for the PDC bit. In the optimization of mechanical design,based on the three principles of design and the principle of force balance,the mechanical structure of the bit was optimized from the aspects of bit crown profile and tooth layout design. In the optimization of hydraulic design,the ANSYS software was used as the main optimization means to perform optimal design of nozzle and flute. By means of analyzing the performance advantages of axe-shaped teeth,based on the indoor performance test data,the PDC bit with axe-shaped teeth was developed. The application of the PDC bits with axe-shaped teeth in wells X1 and Y8 H of the East China Sea show that the ROP has been improved by 15. 11% and 26. 65% respectively,and the wear of the bits is slight. Therefore,the PDC bit with axe-shaped teeth can improve the drilling efficiency of deep formation in the East China Sea.
