Effect of the New Neutron Quality Factor (ICRP 60) on the Transport of Radioactive Material |
| |
Abstract: | AbstractThe ICRP 60 has introduced a new definition of the neutron quality factor. This paper aims to assess the impact of the new neutron quality factor on the transport of radioactive material in France. By using two examples, the transport of fresh mixed oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies and of spent UO2 fuel assemblies, an overview is given of the technical solutions which could be implemented to meet the new regulatory requirements. The options investigated include the modification of packaging designs and resulting operational changes. The influence of each choice on the amount of transport needed is also addressed. |
