Preoxidation of polyacrylonitrile precursors for resultant carbon fibers

Some very complicated changes of chemical reaction and physical morphology, such as generally accepted intramolecular or/and intermolecular cyclization, oxidation, dehydrogenation, etc. are involved in the strictly important preoxidation step of polyacrylonitrile precursors in the process of preparing resultant carbon fibers. This paper is mainly concentrated on the mechanism of preoxidation, some useful approaches for modifying the preoxidation process and related characterizing methods for studying it. The preoxidation degree for obtaining high performance carbon fibers, some parameters for the preoxidizing process, the relationship of structure and properties of preoxidized fiers and resulting carbon fibers are also elucidated.
