Needleless Friction Stir Processing of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheet

Abstract:The work aims to study the effect of needle and needleless friction stir processing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet. AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet was processed by friction stir processing (FSP) at different speed. The grain morphology, tensile properties, wear properties and hardness of AZ31 magnesium alloy surface after needleless stirring were studied and analyzed by tensile testing machine, metallographic microscope, UMT friction and wear testing machine and Vickers hardness machine, and then compared with those of sheet after needle stirring at the same speed. Compared with the sheet under needle stirring at the same speed, the weld surface under needleless stirring was more fine and beautiful. Under needleless processing, the maximum tensile strength of the weld was 242 MPa, the maximum Vickers hardness was 97.6HV, and the average friction coefficient was the lowest, just 0.31. The tensile strength of FSP magnesium alloy weld under needleless stirring increases with the increase of tool speed. The hardness of weld is obviously higher than that of magnesium alloy base metal, and the Vickers hardness decreases with the increase of tool speed. The average friction coefficient of AZ31 magnesium alloy weld obtained under needleless processing increases with the increase of tool speed. Compared with the average friction coefficient of weld obtained under needle processing at the same speed, the average friction coefficient of weld obtained under needleless processing is significantly higher. The grain size of weld surface obtained under needleless processing increases with the increase of speed.
